When NHL 09 was released in the fall of 2008, few PC gamers knew they were watching a swan song. After that season, EA Sports finally broke away from the PC and closed the virtual rink exclusively for PlayStation and Xbox consoles. NHL 09 thus inadvertently became a historical milestone and, for millions of players around the world, the last official hockey game on PC.
The old engine as a blessing and a curse
Owners of the then-new Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 consoles celebrated a revolution in the form of controlling the hockey stick with the right stick (Skill Stick) and modern physics, while the PC version was essentially a recycle of the old PlayStation 2 era. It was a whole generation behind in terms of graphics and gameplay.
Paradoxically, it was this technical backwardness that ensured its immortality. Literally everyone started playing the game.ancThe computer, keyboard controls were at the fingertips of generations, and the pace of arcade hockey was instantly catchy. The addition of Be a Pro, where you created your own hockey player and climbed from the third line to the Stanley Cup winner's ring, offered hundreds of hours of entertainment.

Czech phenomenon and unwavering community
In the Czech Republic and Slovakia, NHL 09 had a completely unique position. The game offered a fully licensed Czech Extraliga and, above all, the legendary dubbing by the duo Robert Záruba and Petr Vichnar. Sayings like "shot from the blue line" or "puck disappears in the protective net" became popular on monitors for years to come.
When EA ended the series on PC, the fans took the fate of the game into their own hands. Thanks to the easy modifiability of the old engine, a tireless community around Czech and international fan forums kept the game alive for more than a decade. Every autumn, unofficial modifications were released with current rosters, new jerseys, player faces and arenas. NHL 09 thus remains a nostalgic monument to the time when computer hockey united generations and when even a technically truncated game managed to live forever thanks to a dedicated community.
