Czech application Ventusky on iOS and Android now has real-time lightning detection. On the radar layer, users can see where lightning has just struck and how strong the storm is heading towards them. Storms with a high number of lightning strikes are the most dangerous. Studies show that storms accompanied by a high number of lightning strikes are more likely to bring hail, torrential rain or strong gusts of wind. The new feature will help protect lives and take the Ventusky platform to the next level in protecting people.
Tens of thousands of lightning strike the world every day. The Ventusky application uses the German Blitzortung.org network to display them, which collects data from ground detectors that people install in their homes. The network covers the whole world, but it has the most accurate detection in North America and Europe. On the other hand, in Africa, the accuracy is low and the number of lightning catches is low.
The Ventusky application not only displays on the radar current lightning that has actually struck, but also areas where lightning could strike. These are marked with red lightning icons in the application and their prediction is for up to 24 hours. Conversely, lightning actually detected is marked with a bright white lightning icon and is displayed only for the current time.
My favorite app. Too bad they don't have a port of the iPad version for Macs with M1/M2.
