In the native Camera app, Portrait mode is limited. So if you try to take a picture of a pet in Portrait mode, for example, the system will report that no person was detected. However, if you use the popular Halide app to take pictures, you may soon be able to get rid of this limitation. At least that's what its developers claim, and they should be able to modify the app to be able to take pictures of animals soon. They also explain that with some additional tools, they can teach iPhone XR can take photos of all subjects in portrait mode.

“You should know that we have a portrait mode that works on animals. With the help of a few more tools, we think we'll be able to release a version of our app that will be able to take pictures of all sorts of things in portrait mode. It seems that in some settings the photo will be a bit more "temperamental". So, in some situations, portrait mode will not work if the distance between the camera and the subject is not correct. But with a can of soda on my desk, the mode worked just fine. So third-party apps could offer more than just taking pictures of people in portrait mode. Also keep in mind that the depth resolution is much lower than with dual cameras. But it seems to be usable.”  the app's developers said on Reddit.

Although limiting Portrait mode on the iPhone XR to only people is a shame, this move is a good one. AppThis is understandable, as it will help differentiate the "cheap" model from the premium line. However, if third-party developers manage to get the iPhone XR's portrait mode to work on objects or animals, the difference between the models will narrow significantly again.
