Mac OS X Public Beta
Mac OS X Public operating system Beta was released in September 2000. It was the successor to Mac OS X Server 1.0, introduced a year and a half earlier. It was the first publicly available version of Mac OS X (now called macOS) to feature the Aqua graphical user interface. It also included (thanks in large part to the open-source Darwin 1.2.1 kernel) two features that Mac users and developers had been waiting for for years: preemptive multitasking and memory protection. It also included many of the standard programs that had been included with macOS for decades, such as TextEdit, Preview, Mail, Terminal or multimedia player QuickTime.
