Meme images are often spread on the internet that are based on real life, but their point is completely made up for dramatic effect. This is exactly the case with the popular image of a man holding a cookie baked in the shape of an iPhone. The text accompanying the photo claims that the man wanted to trick the police, and when he took a bite out of his “phone” in front of them, the police laughed at him and then shot him 26 times in the chest. However, the reality is much less bloody and more humorous (see below).

The comedian who outsmarted himself

The man in the photo is American comedian Randy Liedtke. In December 2013, he actually baked cookies with dark icing that visually closely resembled the then-famous iPhone. His plan was simple from the start. Drive around, hold a cookie to your ear, and wait for a police officer to pull him over for talking on the phone while driving. Then he would take a demonstrative bite of the cookie and ask the officer if it was illegal to eat candy in a car.

He documented the entire event step by step in real time on Twitter. His witty plan initially worked perfectly, and a police car with flashing lights actually stopped him after a while.

An unexpected point with an arrest warrant

Instead of him brilliantly tricking the police officer and becoming an internet hero, the whole situation quickly turned against him. When the officer routinely checked his identity against the police database, he discovered something unpleasant: a warrant had been issued for the comedian's arrest for unpaid parking tickets.

While the terrifying plot of being shot 26 times is just a darkly humorous internet legend alluding to American police brutality, the real ending of the story was rather embarrassing. Liedtke had to follow the police officer to the station and ended his attempt at a viral joke with a photo of the document he received and a sad status: "Nestsorry for that. I'm an idiot... No more iPhone cookies.
