The Notes app on iPhone is one of those tools that most people use almost every day. Some people use it to jot down quick ideas, others to-do lists, and still others to save quotes, links, or work notes. With the advent of iOS 18 but it received one small but practical new feature – the ability to highlight text in color, similar to using a highlighter on paper.

This allows you to quickly mark important passages, keywords, or parts of the text in a long note that you want to return to later.
How to highlight text in Notes
The whole process is very fast and can be completed in just a few clicks:
- Open the Notes app and select a specific note.
- Hold your finger on the text you want to highlight and select the desired section.
- Above the keyboard, tap the Aa button to format.
- Select the highlighter icon from the menu and choose a color.
The text is immediately displayed with the selected background color, so it stands out from the surrounding text at first glance.
When highlighting really comes in handy
This feature makes the most sense for longer notes. For example, if you’re jotting down meeting notes, study materials, or work assignments, color highlighting can help you quickly find important parts. I often use it when working with longer notes—like when I’m jotting down ideas or points for an article throughout the day. I can highlight key sentences and find them in seconds when I’m reading them later, without having to scroll through the entire text.
Notes as a full-fledged work tool
Apple The Notes app has expanded significantly in recent years. Today, you can create lists, tables, add attachments, or scan documents. Color highlighting is just another piece that helps turn an ordinary notebook into a clear workspace. If you store more information in Notes than just short notes, this feature is worth trying. Just a few color highlights and navigating the text is suddenly much faster.
Brilliantly simple application...
Once upon a time, jsrm painfully migrated from Evernote to Onenote, moving a few years notes was pretty rough...
About 3 years ago, JSRM was the place. Onenote switched to Notes and I am completely satisfied...
If Apple or someone has developed a tool that would allow you to migrate the ON database to Notes, many people who are fully in the ecosystem apple I think it would be hilarious.
