While the whole world currently communicates via Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp, Instagram Direct, Viber or many other similar communicators, a good twenty years ago it was completely different. The absolute number one in the world of Internet communicators was the legendary ICQ, an abbreviation of the phrase "I seek you" or, if you prefer, "I'm looking for you". After all, in 2001, ICQ was used, according to the website PCmag.com around 100 million users, which is a breathtaking number considering that the Internet was not yet as widespread as it is now. However, with the advent of competition, ICQ's popularity began to decline, until it was almost forgotten, and now its definitive demise is coming.onec.

icq service discontinuation notice

On the official website of ICQ, which is still in operation, information appeared that the service would be terminated on June 26th, with users to start using other communicators, led by VK Messenger. ICQ is thus saying goodbye to the world after a good 28 years - after all, its first version was released by the Israeli company Mirabilis back in 1996. During its existence, ICQ changed several other owners, which may have had a negative impact on its user popularity to some extent. For example, when the then owner AOL sold this communicator to the Russian server Mail.ru in 2010, many users did not spare criticism and began to use ICQ as achat.

I bet I speak for a lot of us when I say that ICQ has been etched in our memories for a number of things. The first of them is undoubtedly the original contact number, which almost everyone who has ever used ICQ remembers. For example, mine was 450-444-771, and feel free to share yours in the comments so we can reminisce nostalgically. :) Another unforgettable part of ICQ was undoubtedly the games, on which we spent long hours with our friends. Do you remember, for example, Zoopaloola or Slide a llama? If not, it doesn't matter - you will definitely remember the iconic "o ou" when you receive a message. In short and well, ICQ is a legend that for many of us meant to a certain extent the first major introduction to the Internet as such, and although the vast majority of us no longer use it, ICQ will remain in our hearts and memories forever.
