Instagram is testing a new feature that is supposed to bring it closer to TikTok. Instagram has decided to experiment and intends to expand photos and videos and push them more to the forefront. Instagram boss Adam Mosseri confirmed the test in a video posted on Twitter, saying that some channels will start showing “taller photos and videos,” meaning they will take up a larger portion of the screen when viewed.

As you can see in the photo below, the photo in this case extends over a much larger area. Specifically, via the user's nickname and icons for likes, comments, sharing, including the description of the user's photo. This would probably be a nice change and the whole application could look much fresher. Approaching TikTok is no surprise, however. Instagram has long been troubled by users embedding videos first published on TikTok into Reels. Recently, they even appealed to users to stop doing it. At the end of April, the head of Instagram said that the new algorithm will take a backseat to content from TikTok. So if the test passes, it would be a major design change. As for news and Instagram, the platform is currently also testing the possibility of permanently "pinning" photos and videos to the top of the profile, which would be appreciated especially by influencers, as their collaborations could be immediately visible when visiting the profile.
