Long gone are the days when geek and nerdy things were seen by society as entertainment for weirdos. All kinds of video games, board games, dragon lairs and similar things have become part of the mainstream: some already firmly, others are still looking for a way into it, but the direction is clear. Let's see what happened in March in this area of interest.
From Warcraft to Dungeons & Dragons
We're starting with what is undoubtedly one of the biggest geek events of the year. Chris Metzen is a star, a man who spent years at Blizzard creating the worlds, characters, and stories of Warcraft and Starcraft. When he announced his departure five years ago, it was a big loss for Blizzard, but fans were excited to see what he would come up with. And here it is. Surprisingly for many, Chris Metzen is not going into video games. He's planning a new world, yes, but for Dungeons & Dragons. His studio Warchief Gaming has embarked on the Ouroboros project, developing a game and fictional world that will run on the 5th edition system of Dungeons & Dragons. This means that Metzen will use the rules invented by Wizards of the Coast, but the content is entirely his own work (and that of his colleagues at the studio). The first book, with the full title Ouroboros: Coils of the Serpent, was revealed at the end of March and, in addition to introducing the new world, will also bring rules for new nations and professions, in short, a decent RPG module with everything. A Kickstarter campaign will start on April 20th, which aims to financto develop and produce the book, it will be interesting to see how far it will gooneThe amount will increase.
Giant Descent knows the release date
Descent board game is a popular dungeon-crawler, whose second edition has also been released in the Czech Republic. Last year, Fantasy Flight Games revealed a game called Descent: Legends of the Dark, but not much was known about it yet. That changed a few days ago. We know that the new product is not the third edition of Descent, but rather a new product set in the fantasy world of Terrinoth. It is clearly the largest game from the Descent brand and one of the largest boxes that Fantasy Flight Games has ever produced, the giant basic box will cost $ 175, which is an uncompromising amount by the standards of miniature board games and corresponds more to the luxury editions of Kickstarter board game projects. However, the aforementioned amount is a promise of equally uncompromising content, which will be revealed with the approaching release set for August of this year.
Marvel Champions keeps growing
Lockdown is perfect for playing board games and we should be happy that not only other titles are being released, but also new expansions for the games we already have at home. The Marvel Champions card game belongs to the family of LCG games, i.e. card games, where your deck can (or does not have to) expand with gradually released new expansions. Players take on the role of superheroes and together try to defeat variously strong and dangerous villains. Thanks to Blackfire, the game was also released in Czech, and the basic box and the Rise of the Red Skull expansion are now on the market, adding not only new characters but also scenarios connected to the story campaign (told humorously like a comic book). The latest additions to the superhero family are ScarWitch and the upcoming Drax, which have received separate packs. Unfortunately, the Czech board game market is still too small for these smaller expansions to be localized, but on the other hand, those who speak English can safely associate these packs with the original collection and it doesn't matter when playing.
A new PSVR is coming
It was rumored for a long time, but an official announcement was made in March. Virtual reality from Sony will see a second generation. The working title so far is PSVR 2, and although Sony has announced that it will be released in the "near future", it does not mean 2021. So far, we know that the new generation will offer better resolution (which the last generation had lower than PC VR helmets, but compensated for this with the price). , a wider field of view and less cabling, which is an important aspect for VR. Sony has also introduced new controllers that are leaps and bounds different from the previous PS Move controllers. They look futuristic and will offer functions such as fingerprint recognition or haptic response, which is already familiar to owners of PlayStation 5 consoles thanks to the DualSense controller.
Even though the PSVR 2 release is still a long way off, with the current generation of PSVR we can shorten the wait. Sony boasted in a press release that the current range of titles for PSVR has exceeded 500. The vast majority of these are games lasting a few dozen minutes, but we can also find larger titles among them, which were also supplemented at the end of March by a new version of the game Doom 3 converted to virtual reality.
