Studio Niantic, the developer behind the still extremely successful Pokémon Go, has announced an expansion of its partnership with Japanese gaming giant Nintendo. The company will work with the video game giant to develop more games based on its brands using augmented reality technology. The first such project will be an as-yet-untitled game featuring the famous Pikmin. They first appeared in 2001 in the eponymous game for the GameCube console. Nintendo has not paid much attention to the brand in recent years. However, the recent re-release of the third installment of the series on the hybrid Switch was a harbinger of its impending resurrection. In the game, you control colorful pidgeons who gather resources for you and fight in battles.
As already mentioned, mobile Pikmini will use augmented reality technology, which we know from Pokémon Go. According to a press release from Niantic, the game will include tasks that force you to walk around your surroundings and make such walks more enjoyable in some, as yet unknown, way. We don't have more details about the upcoming game yet, but the developers will certainly use their experience from the development of Pokémon Go and the half-forgotten Ingress. Pikmini are to be the first in a planned series of similar games. So the question is what Nintendo has in store for us next. Will we be searching for treasures in cities in a new version of Zelda, or will we be looking into space with Star Fox in augmented reality?
