There is a huge amount of content to be found on YouTube. However, as you have probably discovered many times, it is not always suitable for children under the age of 18. Since YouTube itself has policies for uploading videos, most of these will be posts that are characterized by foul language or inappropriate video topics such as natural disasters and the like. In order for YouTube to comply with the relevant EU directives on media and audiovisual services, users will have to log in, and sometimes this will only be possible with a credit card or ID card.

The entire process will be carried out in such a way that videos will be evaluated by artificial intelligence. As soon as a video is marked as inappropriate, the author can of course appeal and request a review. YouTube videos will, as before, be possible to watch without logging in. However, if a user is under 18 years old, comes across a marked video and YouTube's systems cannot reliably determine their age, they may be asked to submit one of the above documents . In our opinion, such a procedure will apply, for example, to newly created accounts. This procedure cannot be bypassed even in situations where the user could start a video on a third-party platform. In this case, they will be redirected to YouTube to log in. It is currently not entirely clear under what circumstances YouTube will require a credit card or ID card to verify the user's age. However, this obligation will certainly be very uncomfortable for many of them, since showing a credit card or ID card in order to watch a video is probably not very adequate. But how else do you want to verify your age? We'll see how this feature works in the future.
