Cybercriminals are never too nestIn times of uncertainty or various crises, they have used mass panic to attack both companies and corporations and ordinary users, who have often lost their identities or had their computers infected with ransomware, a virus that demands a ransom for decrypting personal data. The global coronavirus pandemic, also known as COVID-19, is no exception, which hackers are exploiting and trying to steal from users using email and social engineering.

If you are actively moving in the Internet waters and have occasionally sailed into one of those pirate bays, you have certainly not missed that some people do not shy away from almost anything and try to rob users in every possible way. This fact is even more true during times of crisis, when people panic and rationality often goes by the wayside. A prime example can be the current coronavirus pandemic, which criminals and hackers are exploiting to their advantage, at least judging by the report from Europolu. To enrich themselves, attackers use both malware, i.e. malicious code that allows them to penetrate the victim's computer, and social engineering, when they pretend to be a health professional and offer tests or masks for a fee. These methods are nothing new under the sun, but in the current situation they are much more effective and often target people who fall into a risk group, i.e. especially the elderly or infected. However, fraudsters are quite creative in many ways and are also coming up with new tactics, such as selling out-of-stock medical supplies online or offering non-existent shares.

In this way, the attackers get both important data and money, and basically don't even have to try too hard. Just pick up the phone, contact a specific person or company and sell non-existent goods that are usually in high demand. Of course, the vast majority of people do not check the veracity of the information and fall for it. Although in this case it is tolerable, in most cases only financial damage, a bigger problem arises in the case of a direct attack on one of the organizations. It is enough to name, for example, the recent cyber attack on the Brno hospital, which shut down the devices for a long time and brought down the entire system. Many operations were therefore postponed and patients had to be transferred to other teaching hospitals. And this is no exception, over the past year up to 75% of healthcare facilities in the United States faced a similar type of attack.

"Criminals are taking advantage of this crisis, they have quickly adapted to it and are constantly coming up with new methods that will help them commit crimes. We are also seeing increased activity among organized groups that are trying to take advantage of the situation and make the most of it. The number of cyber attacks is simply enormous and is constantly increasing. In addition, attackers often deliberately exploit the panic surrounding the COVID-19 virus and come up with innovative methods and new types of malware. These factors are significantly disrupting the lives and safety of citizens in the European Union, which is why we should unite and face the virus and criminals together," he said. Europol in the latest report. As you can see, not only the real world, but also the virtual world is facing a critical situation. We can only hope that users will start to pay more attention.
