A few days ago, developers managed to extract very interesting information from the beta code of the new version of macOS Catalina about an upcoming software update called Pro A mod that should temporarily increase speed MacBookat the expense of their consumption and noise from the fans. Almost immediately after the publication of this discovery, Apple fans began to speculate whether we could also expect a mod with the opposite function - that is, one aimed at saving as much energy as possible, as is now the case with iPhones. However, according to developer Marc Arment, creating it would not be difficult at all, quite the opposite.

In connection with speculations about the energy saving mode, Marco boasted about his own energy saving solution for his MacBooku. This is based on an incredibly simple thing – namely disabling the Intel processor Turbo Boost, which is already enabled by various third-party applications. Turbo Boost consumes a really large amount of energy, also because when it is activated, the processor temperature increases and therefore it needs to be cooled more intensively. However, once it is disabled, in the case of 16” MacBooku Pro The battery life is said to improve by 30 to 50%, which is definitely not a small amount.

Turbo Boost allows the cores in the processor to run faster than their base frequency – of course, assuming that this is possible due to temperature, current consumption and other factors. This technology does not run all the time, but is activated only when the computer requires it due to the need for increased performance for certain operations. Therefore, if Turbo Boost is deactivated, the performance “boost” will not occur and the processor will only reach maximum, which it can handle without it. This is what brings with it the saving of energy that would otherwise be consumed by both the processor and the fan for cooling the processor. In simple terms, it can be said that  a power saving mode based on disabling Turbo Boost would “throttle” maxminimum performance in order to extend the durability of the unit.

This solution would most likely only be possible to deploy on Macs that have a fast enough processor even without Turbo Boost, which is the case here. MacBookwith the aforementioned developer. He claims that even after disabling Turbo Boost, his machine is very fast and has no problem even working in XcodeHowever, machines with less powerful processors could become unusable or crash by activating something similar. minionly usable for very basic tasks. So all we can do is hope that Apple will think about a similar improvement and implement it in their future MacBooky implements. It would undoubtedly be a nice gadget.
