A few hours ago, security researchers from Wandera Threat Labs managed to find in iOS App The store has a total of 17 applications that contain a virus – specifically a Trojan horse. Even though most of these applications are no longer in the store, it certainly does not mean that they will automatically disappear from your iPhone. If for some reason an application that you have installed from App Store, the application can work on your device until you manually remove it.

What is a Trojan horse and what does it actually do?

Considered by many to be the most common virus, a Trojan horse is malware that tries to fake clicks on ads. Considering that the income from advertisements on websites is paid according to how many users clicked on it, a trojan can often be considered as a means of illegal income. Often, the Trojan works by opening a certain web page in the background while using the application, which then simulates clicking on ads. Of course, while you're using the app, you don't know anything about it, and the developers' pockets are filled with ad money.

This type of Trojan horse was found specifically in 17 applications in iOS App Store, even though all applications Apple checks through a series of checks. Unfortunately, these are not completely 100% and from time to time, malicious applications fall through this imaginary sieve. Malicious Trojan horse applications have been included in applications of various categories – from fitness, to productivity and GPS, to various utilities and travel applications.

Who created this Trojan?

Wandera Threat Labs reports that all the apps came from a single Indian developer named AppAspect Technologies Pvt. Ltd. He allegedly had App The store has a total of 51 apps – but it doesn't stop there. Another 28 apps from this developer were found in Google Play Store. However, the developer cannot be blamed immediately, as he did not have to upload the malicious code to the applications. A third-party framework could easily be to blame. When using the application, the malicious code communicated with a C2 server, which has been used for the same purposes on Android in the past. Most of the malicious applications have also been removed from Google Play Store.

How to protect yourself against a Trojan horse?

To start with, it's important to realize that malware can appear in virtually any app you download – especially if it's from a lesser-known developer. Even though every app goes through a security check before being placed in your App It is subject to strict controls, so it can rarely get past the check. If you have installed such an app and you feel that it might contain malware or another threat, check what services the app has access to. If you download an app to track your fitness training, it is of course logical that such an app will not require access to the camera, for example. So if an app has access to more services than it needs, this may be the first sign that something is wrong. You can monitor and adjust these preferences in Settings -> Privacy. However, the best thing you can do if you discover an app containing malware is to remove it from your phone.
