Although it's almost unbelievable, it's been more than a year since the revolutionary iPhone X was introduced, and we recently saw the arrival of its successors, the XS and XS Max. Max. You Apple conceived as a classic "esque" series that does not bring any major design upgrades (except for the size Max), but it brings improvements inside. But they are also nice this year and worth noting. So let's take a look at the first model from the above-mentioned pair.

The packaging neither offends nor inspires
He packed all this year's iPhones Apple into classic white boxes, on the lids of which, following the example of last year, the unlocked screen of the phone with one of the live wallpapers that you can find in it is printed. After opening the top part of the package, you first come into contact with a paper case containing several manuals along with a needle for ejecting the SIM card slot and two stickers of a bitten apple. Then it's the turn of the phone itself iPhone, under which the rest of the accessories are hidden. However, unfortunately you will not find the adapter among them. Lightning/3,5mm Jack konewhich, which Apple bundled with iPhones after removal Jackon their undersides. The absence of a fast charger, which would definitely suit the package, can also be a problem. Apple However, he probably doesn't think so and so he opted for a 5W adapter again along with a meter cable. Lightning cable and of course EarPods also terminated Lightningem.
Design – Same and yet different
In terms of design, not much has changed with the new iPhone XS compared to last year's iPhone X. Perhaps the most noticeable change, which you will hardly notice, is the addition of a new antenna strip to the bottom of the phone, which disrupts the symmetry of the speaker holes on both sides. Lightning koneAlthough this is just a small detail that is not restrictive in any way (on the side where the antenna is now, the iPhone X had it just for symmetry), this may upset customers who love details. However, if the new antenna really means a significant acceleration of LTE and Wi-Fi connections, we will be willing to AppI can forgive even this slight design mistake.
The second design change, which is even less noticeable than the holes on the bottom of the iPhone, is the slightly enlarged camera. Although you will hardly notice this with the naked eye and without the iPhone X next to you, when using some covers from the "dozen", there may be a problem when they will not fit exactly with the camera. However, if you own iPhone X covers that had a slightly wider cutout for the camera on the back, you will have no problem using them on the iPhone XS.
Since I am on iPhone XS was a step up from the old “six”, I was mainly worried about the glass back and how susceptible it would be to various dirt deposits. The iPhones 8, 8 Plus and X are, at least according to our editorial tests, real smudge magnets and if you want to keep them at least a little bit neat, you have to minialmost darker varianty reach for the cover. The glass on last year's iPhoneI personally found them quite slippery and although they hold well in the hand, I would have appreciated some "anti-slip" properties. Both of these things, however, Apple for the new iPhones, in my opinion, solved it.
Compared to last year's iPhones, my dark XS gets less dirty when used without a case, and even without all the care it looks practically the same as when I removed the protective film from it. The back of the phone also seems a bit "thicker" compared to last year, which makes the phone more secure to hold. However, don't take this to mean that the phone is rough and lacks shine, quite the opposite. The surface finish of the new glass, which should be according to Appthe most durable of all used in phonesoneWell, she did her thing.
Display – Breathtaking again
About Super Retina display on which Apple After last year's success, it's back again, and we can't speak of it in anything but superlatives. Resolution 2436 x 1125 pixels, HDR support and Dolby Vision, wide color gamut, True Tone or the old familiar 3D Touch simply has to be fun. All the colors of the display are perfectly vivid, expressive and accurate. If you are switching from iPhones with LCD displays, the one on the iPhone XS will really take your breath away. In the case of switching from the iPhone X, you will “just” enjoy the same luxury that you could first indulge in a year ago. In short, there is practically nothing to criticize about the display, as it looks truly fabulous in combination with narrow frames. For example, when choosing a black wallpaper, you do not have to worry aboutancand to distinguish where it ends and where it actually begins.
However, in order not only to praise, there are also a few things that make me a little sad. The first and biggest, in my opinion, is the very poorly used space in the native Camera application. It could now look completely different thanks to the significant increase in the display, however Apple still bets on the same design with black stripes at the bottom and top. But they are absolutely useless there and unnecessarily reduce the space for photos that are still taken in 4:3 format. At the same time, it would definitely be possible to remove a good half centimeter at the bottom and top. In addition, it would Apple koneIt has allowed us to change the formats in which we take photos, which unfortunately we cannot do now. However, the competition has been able to boast of something similar for some time now. However, as long as we take photos on the iPhone in 4:3, we will not see the narrowing of the black frames.
Another thing that annoys me is that it can't be blamed Applu, but to developers. Many of them were still unable to adapt some of their applications to the display of the new iPhones. However, these are not “no name” titles, but interesting and popular ones appgames like Angry Birds or Assassin's Creed: Identity. Even the iDnes mobile application has not yet received support for displays with a notch, although it is used very widely. Apple is trying to solve this problem with various guidelines for developers, which recently ordered them to create all applications also in a version for frameless displays, but so far it has obviously not succeeded in forcing everyone. It's a shame, the potential of the display remains not fully utilized. While a year ago we would have been willing to tolerate such evils to a certain extent, this year I definitely don't feel that way.
I was wondering if it's worth writing about the cutout in the upper part of the display, which we've gotten used to. However, given that it is one of the most distinctive design elements this year, it certainly deserves a few lines. If you were hoping to Apple decides to remove it or miniIf you think it's a little smaller, you're wrong. This year's cutout is exactly the same as last year's. What's interesting is that while last year it was Apple he more or less bragged and wasn't afraid to show it in all its glory on iPhone boxes, this year, on the contrary, he decided to cleverly hide it with wallpapers. This could theoretically mean that with its current form Apple he is not quite happy anymore and we could say goodbye to him soon.
But the display cutout must notchat – hides perfect security technology, which should be even better in the new version. Apple at the September conference he boasted that he Face ID received new ones iPhonech acceleration, which should make its use a little more convenient again. However, when I tried to compare the speed Face ID on the editorial iPhone X and my XS, I didn't notice a difference in speed. Both variaThey are simply damn fast and enjoyable to use. Even I, a sworn lover of Touch ID, I got so used to it after a few hours that I now consider unlocking via fingerprint more like a relic of history. Even the concerns that I would always have to bend over the XS or that it would not recognize me with half of my face buried in the pillow were in vain. The sensor really captures you from many angles without any problems.
Controls and system – A year old addicting game
As a user who was used to Home Button, I had a slight respect for the gestures on the new iPhone, even though I have already come into contact with them many times. But there is definitely no need to be afraid, as this control is very addictive and easier than with the classic Home buttonem. Thanks to the A12 Bionic processor, everything is also very fast and overall, you will not encounter any situation when browsing the phone, where it would be out of breath or at least slightly indicate a jam. However, the novelty is practically no different from last year's brother in this respect, so praising it is slightly pointless.
Camera - It will put owners of older iPhones on their ass
Probably the biggest improvement received iPhone XS on the rear camera. Like last year, it has two 12 MPx modules, with the primary – wide-angle – boasting an aperture of f/1,8 and the secondary – telephoto lens with double optical zoom – then an aperture of f/2,4. In addition, both lenses are optically stabilized again, which you will appreciate both when recording video and when taking pictures, for example, in motion. However, inside the camera there is a completely new sensor, which is significantly larger than in the iPhone X. While the “ten” boasted a sensor with a size of 1,22μm, iPhone The XS offers 1,4μm. In practice, this should mean that it will take better photos even in poor lighting conditions. I can confirm that it copes well in the dark or in poor lighting conditions. iPhone The XS takes really good photos, and while on older models you would only have black on the display, maxAt least a few light gray spots, XS has no problem capturing the photo.
New software also ensures perfect photos Smart HDR, which is able to put together the best possible photo from several shots taken at the same time. It always takes only the best from each shot and then uses it to compose the photo. In practice, it looks like this: while with older models you might encounter dark or bright spots in a certain photo that would spoil the impression, Smart HDR removes these ailments and offers you a perfect photo without distracting elements. Almost everything always looks very natural, which is a big plus. The rear camera then again handles 4K at 60 fps, and the footage from it is great, just like the iPhone X. It does a little better in poor lighting conditions.
Photos in ideal or slightly worse light:
Photos in the dark. In the last two shots in the gallery, you can compare the quality of the photo from the iPhone 6 and the iPhone XS:
Photos under artificial light:
As for the front camera, it boasts 7 Mpx and f/2,2 aperture. You will again enjoy the portrait mode, which will turn your selfies into really great works. Unfortunately, sometimes too successful. Many users complain that the front camera of the iPhone XS captures people who are prettier than they really are. I can confirm this from my own testing, but I must add in one breath that it is nothing significant. The skin on the selfies is indeed smoother, on the other hand, details are still visible on it, so I would definitely not talk about any Beauty filter. Moreover, I think that this ailment can be fixed very easily with a software update.
Perhaps the most important thing that the camera has brought is the ability to blur the background on already taken portrait images to your liking. This can be done very easily with a slider, which you move to change the blurring of the background directly in real time. Sure, some applications managed similar things a long time ago Applem. However, he has now brought it in a damn good form that you will enjoy. He can turn even a novice into a photographic magician.
As an iPhone 6 owner who has played with both the iPhone 7 and 8 in the past, I can safely say that the camera is truly excellent on the iPhone XS, and if you own an older model, you'll be thrilled with it. This is a huge jump that you will be breathing for quite a few days. But I don't dare to judge whether it is worth it for iPhone X owners to switch to XS just for the sake of the camera. Personally, I wouldn't go for something like that.
Sound - a master in his field
The improvement of the speakers is definitely worth mentioning. As every year, they are a few percent better than the current model, which you will appreciate in practically everything you do on the iPhone. Whether it is playing games, listening to music or watching movies and videos, everything will simply sound perfect. The stereo speakers are very loud and they surpass last year's X by several dozen percent. The sound is very good and the new one does not even lack bass. iPhone no need to be ashamed at all. After a few dozen hours of use, I still stand by the idea I wrote in my first impressions, namely that it now makes sense to me why Apple stopped packing the reduction gear Jack in the packaging for iPhones. Their speakers are now so good that they can often replace speakers without any problems, both in terms of quality and volume.
Endurance and charging - you won't run it out or charge it right away
If you were expecting a revolution in battery life from this year's iPhones, you'll probably be disappointed. The truth is that with active use, minilittle by little iPhonem XS will last you a typical day. You will still have some percentage left in the evening, but you would hardly last the next day with such a charged battery. However, if, for example, you are going on a hike somewhere and you know that you will not use the phone practically, it will certainly not have a problem with two days of moderate use. However, endurance is a very specific topic and depends mainly on how much the user loads the phone, so I would not like to go into a deeper assessment. However, I can say for myself that I am satisfied with the endurance and compared to my old “six” it wins. iPhone XS on the full line.
As for charging the iPhone itself, it's not exactly fun. The included adapter is really slow and will charge your phone from 0 to 100% in about three hours. With a more powerful adapter, for example from your MacBookyou can then go from 0 to 50% in a very respectable 30 minutes. But if MacBook or don't have a special adapter, you'll have to endure a long charging time with the 5W adapter that comes with the box. On the other hand, if you're like me, one of those people who plugs in before bed iPhone automatically to the charger, you will have absolutely no problem even with a 5W adapter.
Summary
How then iPhone How to evaluate the XS? In my opinion, it is a successful evolution of the almost perfect iPhone X, which Apple It is aimed primarily at owners of older iPhones. For owners of the "tens" it probably won't make sense to switch to the XS, unless of course they want the model MaxBut if you own an older model and are upgrading to a new one iPhoneIf you are considering XS, you will definitely love it. It combines the best of what is currently available. Apple offers, in one unit. Its high price may be an obstacle for many, but for it they will get a perfect piece of technology that you will look at with your mouth open for the first few days. Although it is an “esk” iPhone, it definitely worked.
It will also interest owners of new iPhones. I switched from X to XS and there is definitely a "WOW". Some details here are perfected. The camera is about 2 generations different, photos and videos are flawless thanks to smart HDR; larger RAM memory (4GB); much better + stereo microphones; better and louder sound from the speakers; in some places with a worse signal (basement, etc.) I no longer have a problem; the durability is significantly better and the tempered glass seems a bit more durable to me (I've had it for a week and so far not a single hairline). I sold the old one, paid an extra 10k and it was worth it.
Also, exactly the same experience. I mainly don't understand what the camera can do... you simply take a picture of a car in the dark in a parking lot and it looks great, take a photo in a club and it looks great, take a photo of the sunset and it looks great. I'm really MEGA excited and the upgrade from X was definitely worth it. 😊
Exactly. And compared to before + the competition, I feel that the photos are much more color accurate + realistic. ;-)
that lensflare is horrible
my wife went from an ip8 to an XS and she can't praise it enough.. the battery is about 1/3 better, the camera is superb, homeThere are no buttons, the big display is great :)
I have an ip7 and as I follow the reviews and feedback from "free" users and especially see what it can do, I probably won't be able to resist for long :)
So when switching from iP7+8, you and your wife from XS will be totally screwed.. My wife still has a 6S and she claims that it's enough for her - but I'll subtly ask her what color she likes the most and she'll have a big surprise under the tree.. :D
my wife already has an XS, I'll think about it.. :)
I also claim that seven is enough for me, but the photo... :)
the wife switched to an XS friend but to my XS .. because you only have an M…..
Super review, thanks a lot!
Hi, so far I have noticed a detail that in the application whatsapp a messenger The font text is larger than the text in the phone system or other applications. Do you think it will stay that way or will it be fixed later with an application update for the xs display? max?
Díky
I've had the XS for about a week and it's great, it lasts great, plus thanks to wireless charging it's absolutely nestI don't know if I have 20 or 50% battery, at work and at home I have a charger in the car, I put it down and charge it :). The camera is also satisfactory, for me the phone is perfect.
I forgot to write that the gestures are terribly addictive, I still have SE and the touch button is a pain :)
The newer control system + gestures are really very addicting and behind the wheel this kind of control is much better and faster for me.
Today, when I see the new Androids with those round fingerprint sensors on the back, it makes me feel like the phone is from the stone age.. :-D
I have an Ip XS 48 hdin.. I'm testing it and it's really cool... accurate according to the review
I've also had the XS for a week and I'm satisfied, the only thing that bothers me (maybe I'm just too much of a detailer) is the mute switch. I don't even have SE. I don't know if this is normal, does anyone have a similar "problem"
I'm also going to buy the XS series but I still don't know if it's XS or XS Max. I still don't know because I have an SE and a second Lenovo Vibe Z2 Pro, which is a 6" phone. I like the big screen and I'm used to it, but I don't want to break my bank again. So I don't know.
so if Z2 goes away then MaxThe screen is clear, otherwise in my opinion the XS is fully sufficient thanks to the bezel-less display, the display is already big enough
It's just that Z2 will go to the archive. It's just that I also think that the XS is 5,8 inches and that's not much less, so it will probably be enough.
Hello,
What is your experience with mobile data signal and speed? They are considering a purchase, but I don't know if the problems are only in the USA or here too..
for me without a defect, I did not recognize any restrictions after switching from another phone
Calculator APPAfter many years, LU made me think about leaving the brand for good... I don't want to attack the 100k mark with everyday necessities (phone/mobile + the rest). Those days are gone. It's not about feeling or speed anymore. The competition has grown over the years. People just want to be in and for 30-40k they can. But most people still drive cars for 150k. And they'll get there. Goodbye Apple
The competition has not grown and no one anywhere offers such an ecosystem as it has Apple. That's why you are Apple can afford such prices and that is why they are still on Apple long queue products.
You'll end up like me. You buy a leaky Android, you start to notice minor or major details and soon you go back. ;-)
we'll see. One must not be sensitive to details :)
Then I can care less about what you use and what you don't Apple destination 😊
Sure dude, I get you. But what do you want to buy? Samsung? I have a company one and I'm cursing after a year. Windows? I ran away from it and I'm glad I did from day one. The ecosystem is simply a blast.
shock how the second lens calculates the blurred background (bokeh) :-D
I am also an Xska owner and I was switching from a few months old iPhone 7 balls. Everything is great. I'm not as crazy about the display as the editor here, I've probably never held an Android in my life! Moreover, even if the display was LCD (or rather IPS), and had at least FullHD, it still looks great. Like, yes, there is a difference, but I wouldn't be upset about it. I was still considering the Sx Max, I wanted to order it, but somehow it didn't work out - which is good. Xsko is a pretty heavy phone (maybe the few grams in the form of glass and cover are to blame :-), the size is just right for me personally, not bigger really.
It's just that faceID doesn't work for me in the dark, which is probably logical, but what surprised me was that today it didn't charge, I unlocked my phone, connected the charger, there was a charging icon and still only 7%... then it somehow caught on, so I hope that it was just some "fleeting", I would like it to last me in perfect condition with no complaints, which I hope it will….
btw: in terms of price, it seems that 40K for a mobile phone is a steal, like WTF, you already have a pretty bloated PC machine, or a fairly solid laptop (I'm thinking of Win., no Apple, he is different with everything - especially with the prices :-)
But if I consider that I have about 1 android, max two years and then I want another one and I pay around 10 K for it, so what if I Apple it will last 4 years, I'm on my own :-D
Of course, the bezel-less LG G3 was the longest among the last mobile phones, but it was a great phone but I stopped enjoying it after less than two years (my mother still uses it today). Especially with Android, if you want a new system, then go for a new mobile! Fine, it's supposed to be changed, it's a consumer, but there are people who would keep it for 4 years, they don't want to root or mess with it... I also did it from the beginning, I also did it on DOS, in Windowseh, now also in Linux, but I just don't enjoy drilling and tinkering with something anymore...
My next NB could be from Apple, so if he releases something convertible, otherwise I'll go for it….
Face ID It works perfectly fine in the dark. Are you sure you bought it? iphone xs :-D
first sentence: I was switching from about a few months old iPhone 7-ball
and then: so what if Apple lasts 4 years, I'm on my own.
you kind of contradict yourself
in those four years you will feel a lot of old school, even though iphone 6 people still use it. I think the main problem is that most people will break it within 4 years
