When Apple presented together with iPhonem 7 Plus portrait mode, which was able to use the dual camera in combination with software to conjure up photos that look almost like from a SLR camera, made many users' jaws drop. Over time, however, it turned out that although the portrait mode is really a great gadget, in some cases it may not work perfectly, which was manifested, for example, in the poor "reading" of the contours of objects, which was crucial for a good result. However, it seems that this is precisely where Apple worked hard and with the arrival of iOS 12 takes portrait mode to a whole new level.

The improvements to portrait mode were spotted by developer Ben Sandofsky, who is behind the successful photography app Halide. Camera. While testing his camera, Ben noticed that while in iOS 11 portrait mode cannot capture some full details (for example, various standing hairs, whiskers, etc.), iOS 12 can handle it. Apple so he probably worked on improving the camera control software that already makes this thing possible. The contours of the objects should now be much sharper than they have been so far. From the comparison, it is clear that the portrait mode from iOS 12 is able to recognize the edges of objects significantly better, which is reflected in the amount of detail displayed. Thanks to this, the photos will be of significantly higher quality and will again come a little closer to those from classic SLR cameras. However, it is interesting that nothing similar is said about Apple on your own WWDC did not mention, although this improvement is very interesting and many users will appreciate it. On the other hand, the systems hid many surprises for us, which we only learned about during their testing.
I also watched it yesterday and it's really noticeable. Even in ordinary photography there is an improvement. The photo is sharper and handles the dynamic range better. It reminded me a bit of the top camera in the Huawei P20 Pro. Pity that Apple it doesn't have the ability to take pictures with aperture priority even at a wide focus like the P20 Pro.
