The modern world full of likes, followers and shares is not at all misunderstood these days. Perhaps everyone will be pleased if someone appreciates a hand-made photo or status. However, users of the social network Twitter have seen a rapid drop in followers in recent days. If you have a Twitter account, this may have happened to you. This is not a hacker attack or a temporary service outage.

Twitter will no longer include inactive and blocked accounts in the list of total followers. This applies to account holders who have been found guilty of posting inappropriate or offensive content. Until now, the system was set up so that even if a given account was banned for a given reason, the follower counter still took it into account. Accounts that are locked due to violations of the company's standards and the internal terms of the social network remain blocked until their owners log in and change their password. From now on, these locked accounts will not be considered followers of any account they choose to follow.

Most casual users will only lose a small amount of followers due to this change. However, big celebrity accounts can lose hundreds of thousands. For example, President Donald Trump's account lost 100,000 followers immediately after Twitter applied this regulation to the system. In the case of his predecessor, former President Barack Obama, this number climbed up to 400,000. One of the editors of the Washington Post was the first to point out this fact.

We have not learned from the company's official statement whether Twitter will ever again consider blocked accounts in the future. However, we know that the current changes are only an initial step towards the overall reduction of users who do not use their accounts within the framework of the principles that Twitter states in the terms of contract. During the following days, the number of followers should therefore decrease and accounts should continue to be removed from the virtual counter.
