Imagination Technologies is a company few people know by name. However, they are the ones behind the PowerVR mobile graphics accelerators that power a huge number of phones and tablets. The current generation of iPhones has a graphics chip with the PowerVR Rogue architecture and offers very high performance, compared to all the competition. However, Imagination Technologies yesterday introduced its new project, which is next-gen architecture called PowerVR Furian. It should be used in future iPhones and will bring literally brutal performance.

The new graphics accelerator architecture is said to increase real performance by 70-90% compared to current solutions - especially in games and real use. The new architecture will offer 35% higher computing power of shaders, 80% better fill rate and significantly reduced consumption. All this while maintaining the current size of the graphics chips.

Lower power consumption will logically increase the endurance of phones when using demanding graphics calculations. The new architecture supports 4K resolution, laying the foundation for the use of higher resolutions in future iPhonech. With higher resolution comes significantly increased performance, which is required for such a large number of pixels. The higher performance will also be very useful for applications using augmented reality, which should be available on iPhones this year.

According to Imagination Technologies, the first chips based on the PowerVR Furian architecture will be announced in the middle of this year. The first mobile phones with the new chips will arrive at the end of 2018 at the earliest. It is very likely that these chips will also appear in iPhonebecause Apple has been using PowerVR family products for several years. The company is also a partial shareholder in Imagination Technologies and the two firms work closely together.
