Although faster and cheaper SSDs are gaining marketshare and mindshare, traditional hard drive manufacturers are still trying to come up with something new. They are competing with each other in both speed and storage prostorem that it offers. HGST can be an example, as its high-end G-Technology technology is very popular. The company announced its next product today, which is a regular 3,5-inch hard drive Ultrastar HE10, with a staggering 10 terabytes of storage space.
Ordinary is perhaps the wrong word because Ultrastar HE10 is not just any ordinary hard drive. In fact, the hermetically sealed housing hides a total of 7 disk platters and is filled with helium and not air, hence the abbreviation HE in the name. In addition, the measurement showed one great thing, the hard drive itself is only one inch thick, so it can be installed in the latest iMacs, including the one with Retina display. Ultrastar HE10 is not the first 10 terabyte drive from HGST, the first was Ultrastar Archive HA10.
However, the new model is faster than the older one and also reportedly has a 25% longer lifespan. The new Ultrastar HE10 offers a speed of 7200 revolutions per minute with a 256 MB cache. You also get a 5-year warranty, which according to the manufacturer is about half the life of the drive, which means that it should theoretically last you 10 years. The total life is about 2,5 million hours. The manufacturer promises an average delay when writing or reading from the drive of 4,16ms, with a stable transfer speed of 249 MB/s when reading and 225 MB/s when writing. If 10TB is too much for you, you can also choose an 8TB version, and you have a choice of two interfaces, SATA III or SAS. HGST has not yet announced the price, but according to reports from ARS Technica, it will be around 800 dollars (20 CZK).
