It must be a strange feeling to sell a lot of smartphones and not make any real money from them. If you're wondering what it really feels like, ask LG. The Korean company made such a meager profit from smartphones in the second quarter that it would be enough to buy 235 iPhone 6s for the regular price that is offered in Korea.
We must not forget that we mean iPhone 6 with 16GB of memory at the lowest price offered with a contract in Korea. Such a device is sold for 850 won (South Korean currency, 000 CZK), which is the official price from Applu. LG reported a profit of 200 million won, or about $172, from smartphone sales last quarter. If you wanted to convert the profit to the most expensive iPhone, i.e. on iPhone 6 Plus with 128GB storage, then LG would only buy 161 iPhone 6 Plus.
According to financial results, LG sold 8,1 million LTE smartphones in the last quarter and 12,1 million smartphones in total, including the cheaper ones without LTE. You might say that these are not so bad results, but LG had to fight with serious competition all the time and sunk a lot of money in promoting or developing their products. Just for comparison, Apple sold 47,5 million iPhones last quarter.
