I was interested in the possibility of easily creating a Wi-Fi network in places where there is only ethernet, or transferring a database of movies and series or recharging my devices. That's why I decided to test a new device from Kingston, MobileLite, for you Wireless G2. It is an interesting device that combines all the functions listed above, all in one box. It contains one USB host port, an SD/SDHC/SDXC card reader (the package also includes a microSD adapter), an Ethernet port and a micro-USB port for charging the 4640mAh integrated battery.
Drums
The manufacturer states a maximum of 13 hours, which is meant when using a USB key or SD card. In reality, I managed to last about 2.5 hours with an external 8″ disk, which in my opinion is absolutely sufficient. Since MobileLite also works as a power bank, I also tested charging on mine iPad Air 2 where I was able to charge the iPad by about 40% with a fully charged battery. This battery capacity should be enough for 2 to 2,5 charges iPhone 5S and 1,5 to 2 charges iPhone 6. Although the capacity is 4640mAh and the battery v iPhone 6 and 1810mAh, the charging efficiency and the fact that the power bank is yours must also be taken into account iPhone it not only charges but also supplies power during charging, which results in losses from the total capacity and therefore the simple formula external battery capacity/internal battery capacity = number of charges does not work.
Network/Internet
What I really appreciate is the presence of an ethernet port and, as a bonus, the possibility to share mobile internet via a USB modem. Imagine the situation when you arrive at a hotel or for a visit and find only a LAN connection. But you need to work with multiple devices, even with devices that do not have a LAN. You simply connect the LAN to the ethernet port, turn on the device, connect your phone to the wifi network created by the device and that's it. You can configure the network settings via the MobileLite application, which is compatible with iOS as well as the Android platform. A bonus or the so-called cherry on the cake is the possibility to use the built-in USB host port to connect a USB 3G modem and thus share the connection between several devices. The list of supported models is:
– HUAWEI E220
– HUAWEI E303D
– D-Link DWM156
– D-Link DWM157
– Alcatel-X230D(O2)
– HUAWEI E169
– MU Q101
– DATANG M5731
– MobilePeak Titan
– OPTION ICON225
Multimedia
I dare to say that I am such a film and series enthusiast and a fan, and that is why I was interested in the possibility of using the device on a trip where I do not want to take my Macbook, but I would like to see something on the other side. Our gadget supports drives up to 2TB and the FAT/FAT32/NTFS file system, and for us MAC-positive users, the popular exFAT format. I formatted my 2TB 2.5″ drive to exFAT and copied about 100GB of movies and series. What pleasantly surprised me, as the device includes WiFi in the N version, I had no problem playing a 17GB video smoothly from the disc! You have the option to use the official MobileLite application, but it has some shortcomings regarding subtitles. On the go, when you don't want to take your Mac with you, you'll appreciate the possibility of on-the-fly copying, which in practice means that you don't have to copy photos from the card to the iPad/iPhone, but if you connect the card and a USB drive, you can transfer files between storage devices via the application without having to fill up the iPad/iPhone.
Conclusion
This small and handy gadget met all my expectations. You can use it to establish a problem-free Internet connection and also to make things more pleasant chate or trips without having to carry yours macbooku or suffering from low quality video playback. The battery pleasantly surprised me with its durability, even though I think it is more for emergencies and primarily for powering the device itself. I was very pleasantly surprised by the speed of the network and the possibility to watch high-quality movies. And finally, to tempt you a little, I'm preparing a list for you in February iOS applications for playing video, either from the network or without the need to convert video to MP4, which will certainly come in handy when using this gadget. Kingston MobileLite price Wireless G2 is 46,60 Euros including VAT.
Awesome review. I had this device at home and later bought another Apotop Wi-Copy.
I compared both now and I like Apotop better. I moved my mother-in-law to Kingston :-)
That Kingston appWhat a disaster.
I would like to read a review where you would compare both devices.
Richard Volarik
Mr Volarik,
yes, the application is one of the most basic, but I was pleasantly surprised by the supported video formats, as I did not come across a video that would not play. It is also more welcoming and graphically, and I think it is better in terms of settings. Apotop, my colleague, I played with it, but as long as the person does not mind the smaller battery capacity, then the price of performance is better with Kingston. I think, maybe I'm wrong, but then it doesn't support 3G modem. In the next line, when a review of multimedia applications comes out, the applications from Kingston will not play a role, as these applications will take over their functions, and you will only use Kingstonack for configuration. But I have to say that a lot of updates have been coming out lately, and I think it will be much better in the near future.
Can the movie be watched using a media player? (nPlayer, VLC)
Would it be possible to add a review about the speed of reading and writing via Wifi 5Ghz (if it can do it) or at least 2,4GHz?
Can I just ask what is meant by the wifi network? You can do that normally from Iphone that I will share the internet
university: Yes daju sa, it appears like samba on the network
Dali: I'll try to measure the daik sensibly
El Barto: Yes, it is possible, but when you are from abroad without a data package and you have ethernet in your room??? ;)
Štefan Štefanov: already got it, thanks for the enlightenment :)
