Because Apple released the free OS X Mavericks, we expected that Apple will immediately drop software support for older systems, forcing users to switch to the new free OS. However, this is not true and Apple over the weekend, the team surprised us by releasing two updates with support for OS X Mountain Lion. In addition, both updates are intended for the new iMac and are thus the second batch of updates, since Apple issued just a few hours after its launch EFI Update 2.1.
The first update bears the name iMac SMC Firmware Update 1.1 and improves the Power Nap feature on a computer running OS X Mavericks. Apple recommends installing this update on all models with Flash storage, which will ensure that the iMac can run silently in Power Nap mode without the need to run the fan. The update happens to support OS X 10.8.2 and later.
The second update is iMac 10.8.5 Supplemental Update 1.0 and the name already suggests that this is an update intended for the OS X Mountain Lion operating system. The update is according to Applu designed primarily for a model with an nVidia GeForce GT 750M graphics card, so it is a higher 21,5-inch model for €1499. The update includes the following issues:
- Addresses an issue that could cause external drives to disconnect after the computer goes into sleep mode
- Addresses an issue where some USB Bluetooth adapters may not work properly
