As early as 2002, Jonathan Ive, the company's chief designer Apple got to iPad concepts. According to him, the first prototype was created sometime between 2002 and 2004. In an interview for the server networkworld.com the famous designer literally says: "My first memory of the iPad is very vague, but I would guess sometime between 2002 and 2004. We were making models of what later became the iPad, so we were designing the tablet and researching it." The company's first tablet Apple therefore began to be projected eight years before we could meet it on the market. So it is likely that even today in the workshops Apple engineers are working on products that will be introduced in 2020 and possibly beyond.

Server & Hosting Buzzfeed today published photos of one of the first iPad prototypes, which they compare in photos with the 2nd generation iPad. Compared to today's iPad, the first prototype is many times thicker and its diagonal is 12″, today's iPads have a diagonal of 9,7″. It is not known what resolution the company's first tablet had Apple to offer to its users, however, given the 4:3 aspect ratio, it is possible that the resolution was below 1024×768, more likely somewhere around 800×600 pixels. Prothis type is very similar to the computer that was at that time Apple sold as a student laptop, that is Apple iBook.
