If you owned a computer in the late 1990s, you probably experienced moments of sheer despair and absolute excitement while playing strategy games. Although the world was dominated by hits like Command & Conquer or StarCraft, the strategy game that sticks in my mind the most is KKND2: Krossfire, which arrived in the fall of 1998 and offered something that the competition at the time lacked. Namely, complete post-apocalyptic hyperbole, quirky humor, and considerable difficulty.
The story of a devastated Earth, where survivors from underground bunkers, mutated humans on giant beetles, and angry Series 9 robots whose crops were destroyed by war fight against each other, had an unrepeatable atmosphere. I still remember the feeling when the enemy army first rushed out of the fog and leveled my base to the ground in a matter of seconds.
The AI in this game had no mercy. You had to mine oil at lightning speed, carefully plan the construction of buildings, and watch out for every cliff from which the enemy could shoot you. The most popular tactic was to send in cheap units en masse to distract attention, while a fully loaded transporter with suicide kamikaze units crept up from the side.
The memories of watching health bars grow into seasoned veterans after tough battles are incredibly nostalgic. Plus, it had a great, timeless intro that I almost always watched. Have you played this gem?
