Deutsche Telekom Group achieved carbon neutrality from its own operations at the end of last year, becoming the first multinational telecommunications service provider in the world. T-Mobile is contributing to the group's mission, among other things, by saving up to 30 GWh of energy per year. Since 2017, the group has reduced its CO₂ emissions by more than 94% - around 28 million tons - through hundreds of sub-projects at national and multinational levels, including a complete transition to renewable energy in all markets. It is thus continuing its long-term mission of combining technological and economic growth with environmental responsibility.
Deutsche Telekom uses energy-efficient measures, electric vehicles and energy-efficient buildings. But the group's environmental ambition does not end with the last milestone - Deutsche Telekom intends to achieve carbon neutrality throughout its entire supply chain by 2040.
“We are proud to announce that we have achieved carbon neutrality across our entire group. We have reduced emissions by more than 94% since 2017.” – i.e. 4% more than the set target. We will neutralize the remaining emissions through projects aimed at removing CO2 – thanks to this, we are part of the first telecommunications group that is truly carbon neutral in its operations, says Melinda Szabó, CEO of T-Mobile Czech Republic and Slovak Telekom. "T-Mobile contributed to this group target by using 100% green electricity from 2021, projects focused on its provision and production as well as optimization of its use."
All of T-Mobile's energy-saving activities over the past few years have collectively saved 30 GWh of energy per year. As part of the transformation of the entire T-Mobile network in the Czech Republic alone, the operator has shut down approximately 13,000 network elements over the course of 7 years, resulting in approximately 16 GWh of energy savings annually. Energy savings are a key mechanism for long-term emission reductions – the greenest energy is that which is not consumed. ProThrough the AI tool TUPL, T-Mobile realizes energy savings directly in the network in real time. Based on historical data, the tool analyzes the intensity of capacity layer usage on different days and hours and turns layers off or on accordingly in real time - this way, the energy intensity of the network can be reduced without impacting the customer experience. Energy efficiency is indirectly supported, for example, by building an optical network.
In addition to interventions directly in daily operations, T-Mobile has also projected its long-term sustainability vision into the DC7 data center. The data center with an overall performanceonem to 8 MW uses an innovative cooling system based on the principle of indirect freecooling with adiabatic aftercooling with rainwater and works with waste heat recovery (the same technology is used by T-Mobile in its data centers in Hradec Králové and Pilsen), which is used for heatingancelectrical spaces and preheating of diesel generators. Thanks to these measures, the average annual PUE value reaches 1,3. Last year, a data center was installed photovoltaic power plant. The one with theonem 230 kWp will be able to produce up to 250 MWh of electricity per year – thanks to this, it will prevent the creation of up to 112 tons of CO₂ per year. However, the operator also contributes with a number of other measures, albeit smaller ones, which ultimately bring interesting numbers – for example, there is no lack of LED lighting in the buildings or thousands of employeesancDesktop computers and monitors automatically turn off after a long period of inactivity. At the same time, the share of electric cars in the vehicle fleet continues to grow.
"Our goal is to connect - our network clients and partners through corporate responsibility. We want to act as a role model in the industry and in the region and inspire other major players. That is why three Deutsche Telekom companies - T-Mobile Czech Republic, Slovak Telekom and CE Colo Czech Republic, have signed cross-border virtual power purchase agreements (vPPA) with Rezolv Energy, a renewable energy producer. The commitment to purchase 100 GWh of energy over a period of 12 years has significantly supported the construction of a wind farm. It will deliver up to 700 GWh of green energy to the market annually," says Pavel Hadrbolec, Director of the Finance Division of T-Mobile Czech Republic.
