What many of us feared happened at the beginning of the third week of December. This week, Meta shut down for good. Messenger for macOS and Windows in an attempt to get users to return to the website. However, I have the application Messenger I really liked it on Mac and since I use it every day, both personally and for work, I started to think about how to fix this hole on my Mac. The web version in the browser is not a long-term solution - especially when notifications don't work in it and you de facto don't know that someone is writing to you unless you have the application in question.maxyou are illumining.

After several attempts with various “universal communicators”, I finallyonec came across Beeper. Unlike most similar projects, this is not just another chatA new client with ambitions, but it seems to be a really functional solution. Beeper pursues a single goal and does it quite cleanly. Specifically, it tries to merge your chatfrom various services into one application. So you can have everything under one "roof" WhatsAppInstagram Messenger, Telegram, Signal, X, Discord and others on macOS, Windows, Linux and mobiles.

But what I liked most about it is the approach. The application uses the open Matrix protocol and bridges that transfer messages between individual services and Beeper itself. In practice, this means that I can see conversations in the application, reply to them and do not switch between five applications. It is not 100% error-free, some functions of the original clients are missing and you will encounter small bugs here and there, but on the other hand, I like this solution Messenger returned to Mac in the form of an application, more or less with everything. So there are notifications, message previews in the notification center and so on. The only thing that is quite annoying is that Beeper (probably) does not understand 2FA chaty or another form of security (I haven't been able to find more information yet), which is why you may not see the history chatin certain threads and you may not see the contact. But as soon as the contact writes to you, or you write to him, for example via mobile Messenger, of course, everything will be transferred to Beeper and you can now communicate fully again.

After a few days of testing, I'm not afraid to say that Beeper is the most acceptable compromise for me after turning off the official app. I'm definitely not saying that it will change everything and replace the originals, but when you need a functional replacement and don't want to put up with a tab in your browser or an iPad with Messengerem running next to the computer (yes, I considered and tested this form too), Beeper seems like a pretty nice solution. And if Meta really intends to ignore the desktop, Beeper is currently perhaps the best way for those of us who communicate on it daily to save ourselves a few nerves.
