This week is really full of news. After yesterday's introduction of the iPad 11 and iPads Air The M3 is Apple recently revealed that MacBook Air M4, super-powerful chip M3 Ultra and with it a brand new one Mac Studio. It received its latest update on WWDC 2023 and so it was time to Apple revived again with a more powerful chipset, which has now happened and it is truly generous.

So for video editing, compared to the M2 Max i M2 Ultra unfortunately, it practically changes nothing, because Media Engines are at M4 Max and M3(!!) Ultra except for the added AV1 hw decoder, the same, so the AV1 hw encoder is not working again = BIG DISAPPOINTMENT "nice" Apple : - (((
(semi)PRO editors can stay completely calm where they are, even if they are not going to Apple ;-) or wait a while and go e.g. from mini to the discounted M2 Max or even better M2 Ultra, although both, just like with editing "new features", need to be taken into account that NO AV1 hw encode support :-((

You M2 Max / Ultra Feel free to buy it, of course if you want it at all, because we probably won't see an AV1 hw encoder anytime soon in the future, because even M4 Max unfortunately it does not have it (it only has an AV1 hw decoder), so it cannot be reasonably assumed that it would be equipped with it either M4 Ultra...
V Apple (similar to what Sony used to do in the days of analog Betamax vs VHS by JVC) maybe think AV1 by Alliance for Open Media (paradoxically INCLUDING Apple..) will he die by himself or something ;-) :-D
Similarly, you can also M4 Ultra with almost complete certainty, forget about the increase from M2 Ultra over M3 Ultra still the same Media Engine resources, because M4 Max above..
And why is that? Apple in its chips, the hardware is obviously slowing down the most used (and not only) streaming codec today? AV1 is unlike others, including Apple ProRes/RAW UNLICENSED, so nothing from it will be lost on Tim and co.
The aforementioned Sony 'thought' just as stupidly, they foolishly thought that they would have a 'brilliant' Betamaxeven MONOPOLY on (not only) Home Video, so they didn't want to sell the hw license to anyone..
We know how it turned out:
Although worse in terms of image quality, it was cheaper from the start and mainly capable of playing/recording a feature film (primarily a 2h cassette technically simpler and therefore cheaper compared to only 1h of nonsense, both technically and commercially..) about Porn, with which JVC, unlike Sony, did not have a 'sw' licensing problem and which practically kicked VHS into space with a lightning bolt, not to mention ;-) And when the guys from JVC were very happy to sell the license not only to 'sw' porn kings, but also to all hw competitors, it was all over the place :-)
Just a side note about possible historical parallels..
Ergo, the only ones who can APPLAUSE such a demented "strategy" are competing GPU and CPU producers and PCs in general.

However, in the end it was of course a complex of everything, starting with JVC's licensing and pricing policy for both 'sw' and hw. The involvement of large film corporations also played a significant role, especially in the possibility of renting, i.e. the once mega-popular video rental stores with all kinds of content :-)
