Czech Railways will soon start testing Starlink in its cars. Satellite internet connection will allow not only the crew, but also passengers to use the internet even in places where there are classic signal outages. If you have ever traveled by train, for example between Brno and Prague, you will certainly agree with me that in terms of signal coverage, it is not exactly ideal. Whether you rely on Wi-Fi on the train or on your 5G connection, there are sections where the internet either does not work at all or is very slow. However, this should change soon, thanks to Starlink.

The first to receive it will be the InterPanter trains, which run on the Brno-Břeclav-Olomouc routes and also Brno-Česká Třebová – Prague. The introduction of Starlink is intended to offer better internet connectivity, especially on longer routes, and Czech Railways, and with them the Czech Republic, will be among the first European countries to try out Starlink. During the test run, Czech Railways want to test how the connection works and how much better it is than the currently used 5G.

Czech Railways expects that the use of Starlink will increase internet speeds and reduce connection drops experienced by passengers on longer journeys. “We will become one of the first European railway operators to test the technology with specially modified antennas on trains,” said Michal Krapinec.

The testing is free of charge and Czech Railways will only pay for minor technical modifications to the trains during the installation of the equipment. Testing should begin within a few weeks, when the first Starlink antenna arrives and is installed. In addition to using Starlink, Czech Railways is also trying to use 5G and improve this connection, especially in Pendolino and Railjet trains. Currently, Wi-Fi connection covers 90% of all long-distance trains operated by Czech Railways.
