Commercial message: Apple in 2015 and 2016 introduced updated keyboards for MacBookand MacBooky Pro and debuted new butterfly keyboards with mechanical switches under each key, which miniThey reduce thickness while providing a comfortable grip under the fingers. Butterfly keys were offered on Mac computers from 2015 to 2019.

Unfortunately, butterfly keyboards were very controversial and were called one of the company's worst design decisions due to their susceptibility to malfunctions caused by small particles such as crumbs, or heat issues. All butterfly keyboards in models MacBook Pro, MacBook a MacBook Air introduced between 2016 and 2019 (and in the case of MacBookin 2015) have butterfly keys, which can be prone to failure.

Company Apple in 2019, the butterfly keyboard began to be phased out, and from May 2020, it will be included in new models MacBook Air a MacBook Pro no longer uses it, although older machines will continue to have problems as they cannot be updated to the new scissor switch mechanisms.

What's the problem?

Butterfly keys use a mechanism that is different from the scissor mechanism used in traditional keyboards. It's called a butterfly mechanism because the parts below the key resemble butterfly wings that have a joint in the middle, rather than overlapping like scissors.

Company Apple switched to a butterfly mechanism to make a thinner keyboard, which is possible because each key moves less when pressed, so less space is needed. The keyboard provides satisfactory travel and stability when pressing each key, but unfortunately, the thin butterfly mechanism can become clogged with crumbs, dust, and other particles, resulting in the keys nestthey click correctly, keys are missing, or letters are repeated.

The keyboard is faulty. MacBookThis is a problem because replacing the keyboard usually requires replacing the entire upper assembly of the computer (topcase), which is not a cheap repair, especially at authorized service centers.

Which Macs are affected?

ProKeyboard issues may occur on 13″ MacBooků Pro from 2016, 2017 and 2018 and 15″ MacBooků Pro from 2016, 2018 and 2018. Furthermore MacBooků Air from 2018 and 2019

According to the company's own statement Apple butterfly keyboard problems have only been reported by a "small percentage" of Mac users, but anecdotal claims and the high visibility of the problem have led the public to believe that most butterfly keyboards fail. The likelihood of damage increases if the user is MacBooku "avid typist" and is able to perform more keystrokes per minute on the keyboard than the average user.

What should I do if my keyboard breaks?

Regardless of what MacBook, MacBook Air or MacBook Pro you have, you should contact an authorized service center Apple, where they will offer you repair options. There is a recognized repair program for this defect directly from the manufacturer. This program is recognized for devices less than 5 years old. The condition is that the device is not damaged by liquid. Unfortunately, models from 2016 have already dropped out of this program, so usually the service will not offer you any other solution than to replace the entire topcase incl. new keyboards and batteries which may not be economical.

In some cases, when a large crumb gets under the key, the key will noticeably block. In some cases, you can shake the key to remove the crumbs and make the key work again, we also recommend blowing the keyboard with compressed air. Unfortunately, sometimes even this may not help. The key may be mechanically damaged from below, physically falling off, the key mechanism may be stuck, the microswitch under the button may be oxidized. In such cases, the authorized service will usually refuse to repair due to user damage.

The MacPodpora s.r.o. service offers an alternative solution

Our service center has a solution for these cases: we can replace a broken key, repair a damaged mechanism, and even a destroyed microswitch with liquid. All without the need for an expensive replacement of the entire keyboard!
