Another social network operating on the territory of Russia received a severe blow. This time we are talking about TikTok, which is used to share short videos created by its users. At the same time, it is now not possible to share them on Russian territory on TikTok, just as it is not possible to broadcast live through it. However, the reason is not the boycott of Russia by the company operating TikTok for its invasion of Ukraine, but something completely different.

Last week, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a fake news law aimed at combating the spread of fake news. People who intentionally spread them face a range of penalties, starting with financial penalties and ending with up to 15 years in prison, which is a very long time given the nature of the crime. And it is the Chinese TikTok that has now decided to react to the adoption of this law by blocking the uploading of videos and the launch of live broadcasts on the territory of Russia, as it is not sure how the law applies to it as an operator. In the coming days and weeks, the new law will be investigated and, according to the results of the investigation, it will take further appropriate steps, while both unblocking and a permanent ban cannot be ruled out.

The actions of TikTok could be described with a bit of exaggeration with the words "the wolf ate itself and the goat remained whole" for a simple reason. Of course, the law to combat fake news was introduced mainly because of Russia's attempt to suppress information about the war in Ukraine, and of course there is a lot of it on TikTok as well. But the catch is that it's not just coming from Russians, but from people all over the world, and since you get content from all over the world on TikTok, it won't be possible for Russians who want information about the war to find it, even if of course, in a slightly more complicated way, as home videos are preferred. However, apparently China does not want Russia too much, as it also does not agree with the invasion of Ukraine, so it cannot be expected that, for example, it would order TikTok to change its algorithms so that it only shows a certain type of videos in Russia. Of course, only time will tell.
