Nowadays, you can see countless photos of Christmas trees on social media. People often compete to see which one is the prettiest, the biggest or the most interestingly decorated. However, Maura Willems, a student at the Dutch Technical University in Delft, took a slightly different approach. Using a tunneling microscope, which allows you to observe atoms and change their position, she removed 51 atoms from a perfect crystalline structure. This resulted in the smallest Christmas tree, measuring just 4 nanometers. Just to give you an idea – a human hair is about 75 nanometers wide on average. You can find the photo, along with the lovely student, in the gallery below the paragraph. Merry Christmas.
