I have always associated games with perfect graphics, long gameplay and a full-fledged campaign, or possibly a number of individual missions. Maybe that's why nothing has ever bothered me. App Store pro iOS it didn't catch on too well and when I wanted to play, I always preferred to turn on the PlayStation. I admit that I didn't know Company of Heroes and I successfully ignored it 14 long years ago when the game first saw the light of day. However, after 14 long years, the legendary strategy is back and has visited our iPads and when I did nestihl at the time, now I thought I had to play it. Let's take a look at whether the game shows its age or whether, on the contrary, it feels like a game from another world, from the computer world, on iPads.

The game is divided into three game modes that you can fully enjoy. The first one is training, which I wouldn't normally classify as a game. However, it is so complex and extensive that it is really worth playing for beginners. First of all, you will gain more time in the game, but most importantly, you will also learn something. The second chapter of the game is the classic campaign, which offers 15 missions. They will take you from the landing in Normandy to protecting the Red Ball Express in France.ancii. The game partly offers the same environments and locations as the famous series Brotherhood of Steel, which you may know from HBO production. The missions are mostly offensive, but there are also exceptions when you need to build defenses and protect the perimeter. All missions are exciting and push you forward second by second so that you will have a hard time turning off the game and leaving the mission you are playing.

The entire campaign is playable only for the Allies, or rather for the American army, and is based on historical events. It is still a game and some things in it have been adjusted to make it as playable as possible, but you don't have to worry, for example, that the Germans would land in Normandy and you would defend it. The game is based on everything being the same as it was in history. The campaign itself can be completed in a few hours of play and, thanks to the high pace, it won't take even the slowest players more than 6 hours. For example, the first mission, the Normandy landings, is really a question of maxat least fifteen minutes.

Skirmishes are undoubtedly where you will spend the most time in the game. That is, the mode where you choose the map, this time even the side (America or Germany) and the initial settings of the game. Subsequently, you just build a base, collect enough resources and try to build an army to decimate your opponents. Maps are available for you and another computer opponent, or up to three other opponents. I have to admit that the maps are really interesting and due to the fact that a lot of them were created in the gaming community and made it to the official game thanks to the community vote, it is really worth it and you can see that the maps were made by players for players so that the best experience. The Skirmish mode, as the skirmish is referred to in the game, is the most fun in all of Company of Heroes and also the one that will last you tens, maybe even hundreds of hours of fun. Because the game uses a perfect system to make you really fight from the beginning to the end.

A strategy that won't let you camp

ProThe problem with many strategy games is that basically nothing happens throughout the game, and players create as many units as possible within their base, which they then send against each other. The entire game lasts half an hour, but it offers a single battle that takes place in the last five minutes. However, Company of Heroes avoids this trend in a perfect way that does not allow you to camp. On the contrary, from the very beginning of the game, you are fighting for so-called checkpoints, which you must have occupied in order to be able to mine enough resources to produce units. The number of units is also limited by how large the area on the map you control. So from the beginning, smaller units will fight for individual checkpoints that you are trying to occupy throughout the game. Thanks to this, the war between you and the artificial intelligence is basically going on from the beginning to the end of the game. The only exception is playing against the artificial intelligence setting at the Weak level, which does not occupy too many checkpoints.

If you simply decide to camp in the base camp, you will not be very successful, because you will not have the resources to create enough units, both for attack and for the defense of the base itself. In order to be able to control enemy territories, you have the option of building observation towers further from your base, barricading yourself in buildings or building various roadblocks or bunkers. Thanks to this, you can not use small unitschat guard individual checkpoints and resist the attacks of the enemy, who is trying to control these strategic places. The whole game thus gains a completely different focus and perspective than in conventional strategies. By the way, this system comes from the legendary Warhammer 40 strategy.

There are countless strategies that have different units designed to destroy different targets, but in the end, if you send two hundred soldiers against one tank, then it doesn't matter that they have nothing but machine guns and sooner or later they will shoot the tank. Don't expect anything like that in Company of Heroes. Individual units are designed specifically to destroy specific targets and infantrymen, even in a significant number of cases, simply cannot destroy a tank, even if they shoot at it for an hour with their machine guns. This makes it necessary to build different units strategically and use both infantry and individual armored vehicles. This is the only way to have aancand succeed, just like in a real war. You have to create different units that can then fight against enemy units with similar objectives.

Unreal graphics and technical processing

Looking at the pictures from the PC reviews while writing the review, I feel that either the reviewers did not use the full graphics settings on the computers of the time, which did not have to keep up with the game, or that the authors improved it significantly. The graphics on the iPad are actually better than those from the computer version of the game. On the other hand, it's true that you can't zoom in on the game in as much detail as in the case of the PC version, and zooming out has its limits, but at the same distance of the camera from the battlefield, the iPad version is significantly nicer than the original for PC. There is no shortage of detail on individual units or bases, but also on the surrounding landscape. Vehicles leave track marks in the ground, you can see bullets flying when shooting and so on, all in great graphics.

Personally, I play on an iPad. Pro 10,5″, i.e. on the latest model from the workshop Applu. However, the game runs on all iPads that run iOS 13. However, I would like to warn you right away - even a 10,5″ iPad sometimes feels small to me and there are situations when I would use the greater possibility of zooming out or, conversely, having a larger display on my device. Play on iPad mini so it is certainly possible, but on the other hand the experience will be significantly worse than if you are playing a racing game for example and you basically don't care how big your iPad's display is. The game doesn't lag at all and even during battles where dozens of soldiers and a lot of vehicles are used on both sides, I didn't experience the slightest twitch. On the other hand, today's iPad Pro significantly more powerful than average computers at the time Company of Heroes was released on PC.

The game itself requires capacity for installation miniYou need at least 6GB of free space, and you need another 2GB to install all the packs, HD textures, and other stuff. Overall, you need to have at least 8GB of space on your iPad to install the complete campaign, HD textures, and other additional data. While you download the installation file directly by purchasing the game, you download the add-ons as part of the in-app purchase, but they are available for free. The game just splits its size between the download as part of the purchase of the game itself and in-game purchases. Once you buy the game, all its upgrades are free, and the game doesn't even offer any microtransactions, so there's nothing to worry about.

The only thing you need to be careful about is the flashlight. I am able to use it when maxAt maximum brightness, your iPad can be drained in 5 to 6 skirmish battles, or about 3 to 3,5 hours of play. The developers themselves are aware of the huge burden on energy consumption, and have added a special mode called Battery Saver to the game. It doesn't degrade the game in any way in terms of graphics, but the movement of units and overall movement around the map is significantly less smooth than when the mode is deactivated. Even with it activated, don't expect your iPad to last ten hours like when you're browsing the internet.

However, one unpleasant thing happened to me while playing, which I would not have done on an iPad. Pro I haven't experienced it yet and I know it more from an older person. iPhone 8. After about 20 minutes of playing at full brightness, my display got noticeably darker, and it could be due to the tablet overheating. As soon as I turned off the game, the brightness went back to full (no, I don't actually have automatic brightness set). However, this is a problem with the iPad itself and not the game. In my opinion, the game is optimized perfectly, as evidenced by the loading times, during which I nestYou won't even realize you're already on the battlefield.

The game is completely in Czech, including descriptions of individual units, settings or instructions for playing. Everything is translated perfectly and the only thing you might find a bit funny is the fact that in the shootout mode you play against the computer instead of against the iPad. So if you don't speak English and are afraid that you might not understand some things in the game, they are simply described in Czech, including explanations of why, for example, you cannot build a given building and what needs to be done in order to be able to build it.

iPad Company of heroes

The only slight drawback is the current absence of multiplayer. It should be added to the game in the form of an update over time, but it is not yet confirmed when this will happen and for now you can only play against artificial intelligence. However, it is at a really good level and if you are not a fanatic of computer games, but rather like me just an occasional player, then believe me that you will have your hands full even on the normal difficulty.

If I had to criticize the game at all, it is to some extent its atmosphere. This is perfect in the campaign, when the game is accompanied by a series of scripted situations that can create an atmosphere and make you feel like you are on the battlefield. Unfortunately, in the case of playing skirmish, i.e. the shootout mode, as this mode is labeled in the game, I miss the atmosphere. Because the game is just too pretty for my taste, and after ten tanks roll across the battlefield destroying the enemy line, we should see and almost feel the hell we've unleashed. However, everything is too sterile and the destroyed units simply disappear from the map after a few seconds and there is not even destroyed land, burnt forests or anything like that left behind. In short, the atmosphere doesn't do much, which is really a shame for a war game, and honestly, I could imagine a few little things that would be enough to add and everything would feel much more real.

The best strategy game on the iPad!

Be damned careful before you buy the game. Because it's damn addictive and time goes by faster than you might think. Company of Heroes is a great example that classic games - if they are of good quality - have their place on the iPad, and on the contrary, they can easily roll in all directions those created specifically for mobile devices. The game is full-fledged entertainment, which lacks nothing at all, and I believe that if you like classic strategies, and you like historical battles in great graphics, then you will be as excited as I am. It is currently the best strategy game you can play on the iPad. The original Company of Heroes has a whopping 93% on Metacritic and most gaming magazines gave it the highest marks at the time of release, now I can see why.
