The first and so far the only functional Supercharger V3 station can be found in Fremont, and only members of Tesla's special early access program can try it. This is a small group of car owners who have the opportunity to test similar innovations first. Other Tesla vehicle owners will be able to test the new stations during the second quarter of this year, when the firmware upgrade required to use the V3 station will also arrive. However, here in Europe and also in Asia, owners will have to wait until the last quarter of 2019, because only then will the new charging stations arrive.
The arrival of a new type of charging station is great news, as it has significantly improved performance compared to the previous V2 version. The previous model had maximal performanceonem 150 kW, but was locked at 120 kW. The power of the V2 stations will increase to 145 kW over time, which is still very little compared to the 250 kW that the V3 can handle. However, this power only applies to the Model 3, which has a new type of battery, while the Model S and Model X still have to use only 120 kW.
Along with the stations, Tesla also introduced a new feature called On-Route. Battery Warmup. This will ensure the ideal heating of the battery if the driver sets the route to the charging station. This will improve the average charging time by up to 25%. However, Tesla is still trying in vain to catch up with Volkswagen's Electrify America stations, which allow for up to 350 kW of power.
Tesla already operates 1.441 charging stations worldwide, which contain a total of 12.888 Superchargers. How many of them will be replaced by the V3 version is not known, but the total number of stations will definitely increase.
