New patent Applu, generally called Surface Treatment, could significantly change the look of future iPhones if used. The glass back could create rainbow effects and various color gradients and patterns. The patent envisions using CNC machines to create grooves in the surface. These grooves would change the refraction of light. Apple would thus resent the sandblasting method and use another technology, which would subsequently process the grooves in such a way as to create a smooth shift of colors when the light is refracted.
