With a colleague and a friend Romanem, which he founded years ago Letem svetem Applem, which I have been writing about for almost 10 years, I have experienced so much over the years that sometimes I think to myself that he actually has nothing to surprise me anymore. But then he comes up with something that can shock, amuse or interest me more or less. That is exactly what happened a few days ago when he told me that he would like to find the grave of his grandfather, who has been dead for over 20 years, and whom he would like to remember in the cemetery in Židenice, Brno. The catch, however, was that, given that Roman He has been living abroad for a long time, he didn't know exactly where the grave was, and since the cemetery in Židenice is really large, we had an interesting challenge in the form of a search operation. And that's not being denied.

The biggest problem was that although we knew the grandfather's name, we found that the Brno cemetery administration did not have him registered in its records of the deceased and those buried in the local cemeteries. This can happen when, for example, a family places an urn with the ashes of the deceased themselves and subsequently does not report the placement to the cemetery administration. With a bit of exaggeration, it can be said that in such a case it is even possible to lose the deceased, which almost happened here. RomanOur grandfather was not registered and the little we knew about him was his name and that he lived with a partner at the end of his life (not Roman(his grandmother), who apparently buried him.

This was ultimately key, as based on her name we were subsequently able to find a grave on the electronic map of the cemetery in Židenice, which seemed to be a fairly likely resting place. Romanova grandfather. Just for fun, many larger cities offer electronic cemetery maps, so if you are dealing with a similar problem, I recommend using this option. You can download maps of Brno cemeteries view here.

Although the visit to the grave of the partner was Romanof course, to some extent, a bet on the lottery, the very next day after finding out, we went to the cemetery to see the place with our own eyes and, ideally, to find out whether we had found the right place in our search. And here, the electronic map of the cemetery came into play again, in combination with iPhone. Within this map, you can enable tracking of your location, which is an absolutely key feature, especially in large cemeteries. Suddenly, you can see your location perfectly on the map and thanks to that, you can get to where you need to very precisely.

To make our event as interesting as possible, of course, the potential grave site lay Romanova grandfather at the very end of the cemetery, which is both vast and unknown to both of us. Activating tracking our location on the map was therefore an absolutely perfect search assistant, which was able to bring us to the specific grave site with accuracy, literally where we needed to be. According to the map with the shared location, we came to the specific grave number, whose tombstone subsequently confirmed to us that it was not only the partner who lies there Romanova's grandfather, but also himself. After the urn was placed, he was not "just" registered, but was properly inscribed on the tombstone.

We have therefore accomplished the task we set ourselves with flying colors and Romanwho really cared about finding the grave, so now after years tooneHe knows where he can go to remember or just contemplate. And honestly, you could see that a stone has been lifted from his heart and he is really happy that this mission went so well and I am even more happy for it. But I am writing these lines mainly because I am convinced that a similar plot can be solved by more people and while a few years ago something similar would have been hardly feasible due to the absence of digital cemetery maps, smartphones and the like, now you are able to implement similar things quickly and easily. And although luck also played a role in our case, one thing is certain. Without modern technologies, we would not have been able to go to the grave RomanIt was much more difficult, if at all, to get my grandfather. And it is moments like these that remind me that all those iPhones, maps, and other technological gadgets are not just toys for enthusiasts, but can also help a person in times when it really matters.
