If you owned a computer in the 1990s, you probably either had a blast playing a Czech game or smashed your keyboard in anger. It's the puzzle gem Fish Fillets from the Brno studio Altar Interactive. This "underwater detective" with two agents in fish skin has become an indelible part of the history of our gaming scene.
The main attraction was undoubtedly the dubbing. The little fish were constantly teasing each other and bursting with jokes. The humor often parodied well-known films, so some jokes simply became unforgettable. Each level was a kind of unique world with its own story.
But beneath the funny exterior was one of the most difficult logic games of all time. The rules were simple. The fish were not allowed tochat nothing could fall on either of their heads and they had to push the objects together so that they could both swim to the exit. In practice, however, this meant thatoneCareful planning of every move. One small mistake was enough and the entire level you spent an hour solving could end in failure.
Fish Fillets is now a cult, which, thanks to its open source code, lives on even on modern systems. Even after years, it remains proof that Czech game design was able to combine top-notch gameplay with humor that has never aged. Only the feeling of victory after conquering a particularly tricky room is still comparable to few gaming experiences. Years later, a second part was released, but in my opinion it was not as successful (although it was also fun). Have you played this gem?
