Another major display upgrade is coming Apple products? It's quite possible. Apple recently had a new patent approved, which indicates that Touch ID under the display may be in play not only for the future iPhone, but also for devices such as the iPad or even Mac. Patents often tempt us to something that will never come true in the future, but here we have a surprisingly large number of details. Their implementation in the case of Macs is also supported by the fact that rumors have appeared several times in recent months that it has Apple plans to introduce a Mac with a touchscreen, which would Touch ID under the display made logical sense.

The patent is inconspicuously called "Display with localized brightness adjustment capabilities". But it is not about True Tone nor about automatic adjustment according to the ambient light. The idea is different. A certain part of the pixels on the display can be lit up for a moment to function as a backlight for scanning a fingerprint. It could work by having an array of light sensors under the display and “transparent windows” in the display above them. When the user then places their finger, the control circuits select only a small area of the pixels to illuminate the finger, and the sensors then use the reflected light to recognize the fingerprint. In addition, thanks to this solution, the display would still remain fully readable, so that it could display, for example, a confirmation for a payment via Apple Pay or anything similar.
Two possible varianty
The patent further states that Apple is considering two configurations – namely, either the system detects exactly where the finger is and lights up that area (theoretically, this would mean you could place your finger almost anywhere). or there is a specific designated cutout on the display where the sensor area is concentrated. Honestly, if I had to guess, Apple would rather have the second scenario, but the reality with the first generation is that it will end up in one clearly defined place. It's easier for communication and for consistency of unlocking.
