If you're thinking about replacing your router, beware. The FBI is warning that at least 13 older router models are at serious risk of being hacked and exploited by botnets.
According to a recent FBI report, hackers have been exploiting Linksys routers, which are sold under the Cisco brand, for several years . These models are no longer supported by updates, making them open to attacks. Infected routers can be used to spread malware, redirect traffic , and even connect to botnets that hackers use to hide their activities.
The most common method of attack is malware known as TheMoon , which has been in circulation among cybercriminals since 2014. The FBI has previously intervened and seized two proxy services (Anyproxy and 5Socks) that were allegedly operated through the compromised routers.
List of risky routers according to the FBI:
E1200
E2500
E1000
E4200
E1500
E300
E3200
WRT320N
E1550
WRT610N
E100
M10
WRT310N
Quick note : According to PC Mag, there was an error in the list. The E100 and E300 models are reportedly products of Cradlepoint, which claims they are not affected by the issue. However, the FBI has not yet updated the list and is advising all owners of these routers to consider replacing them.
If your router is on the list and hasn't received a security update in years, it's time to replace it . Older routers can be easy entry points for hackers and pose a huge risk to your privacy and security.
May the entire FBI like it...
