Apple published a minute-long video that reminds us of the important role the Emergency SOS feature can play on Apple Watch. The spot dramatically depicts the true story of Australian Rick Shearman, who was swept out to sea by a strong current in Byron Bay in July last year. Shearman went for a swim, but the currents carried him more than a mile from shore. After twenty minutes of struggling in vain with the waves, he realized he wouldn't be able to get back on his own. At that moment, he used his Apple Watch and activated the Emergency SOS function.
By pressing the side button on his watch, he automatically connected with local emergency services. He remained on the line for an hour, guiding them to his location until he was rescued by a helicopter. Apple The video plays a clip from an emergency call, showing how essential readily available technology can be in times of crisis. Emergency SOS is available on all models Apple Watch and is activated by a long press of the side button, which automatically calls the emergency number in the country you are in. But hopefully none of us will ever need it.
