Jony Ive, legendary designer and long-time chief designer Applu, has stayed away from the development of new devices since leaving the tech giant. He's been more of a backstage guy since founding his own design firm, LoveFrom. But now it looks like he's making a comeback — and with a project that could revolutionize how we use artificial intelligence in our everyday lives.

Ive is currently working with Sam Altman, the head of OpenAI, on the development of a completely new device, powered by artificial intelligence. According to information from The Information server even OpenAI is considering acquiring the startup io, which is developing this product under the leadership of Altman and Ive's collaboration.

While details remain a mystery, early indications suggest that this is likely not “another smartphone.” Although the design has been likened to a “phone without a screen” in its early stages, people close to the project insist that it is not a phone. But this elusiveness may be a sign of how innovative a device is being created — something that may not easily fit into existing electronics categories.

It is possible that this will be a kind of next-generation PDA — a device designed from the ground up for the era of artificial intelligence, not as a complement to the smartphone, but as its possible successor.

Jony Ive is known for its emphasis on simplicity, intuitive controls, and aesthetics. If it applies similar principles to its new AI product, we could be looking at a device that is not only technologically groundbreaking, but also extremely user-friendly and elegant. All this with the added benefit of deep integration with powerful models OpenAI, such as GPT-4 or its future successors.
