Apple TV+ is a relatively young streaming platform that was launched in 2019 with the aim of competing with giants like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and Disney+ have gained the attention of viewers and are praised by the company itself thanks to their exclusive focus on original content and ambitious productions. AppleBut how does  TV+ really compare to the competition?

With the release of the second season of the award-winning series Severancin January 2025 Apple recorded an increase in subscribers compared to previous months Apple TV+. According to the latest data from JustWatch, the share of Apple TV+ in the US streaming services market increased from 7% in the last quarter of 2024 to 8% in the first quarter of 2025. Although the growth was positive, it was not large enough to  TV+ could fundamentally threaten the largest players in the market.

 TV+ versus competition

According to JustWatch's report on the share of streaming platforms in the US for the first quarter of 2025, Apple TV+ with 8% still holds a position below most of the main competitors:

  • Amazon Prime Video – 21%
  • Netflix – 20%
  • Max (HBO Max) – 13%
  • Disney+ – 12%
  • Hulu – 10%
  • Apple TV+ – 8%
  • Paramount+ – 7%
  • Peacock – 2%
  • Starz – 2%
  • Other services – 5%

It is clear from these data that while Apple TV+ is growing, its market share remains relatively small compared to established platforms that have larger content libraries and longer histories in the market.

Apple TV+ versus competition

One of the main reasons for the slower growth of the  TV+ platform is its focus exclusively on original content. While Netflix or Disney+ offer thousands of titles, including older movies and series, Apple TV+ has only around 300 titles. This strategy does produce high-quality productions that win prestigious awards (such as Oscar for the film "CODA" or an Emmy for "Ted Lasso"), but it also limits the library for viewers looking for a wide range of content.

Despite its success in terms of content quality,  TV+ is still not a profitable service. According to a recent report Apple loses approximately $1 billion each year operating this platform. It is estimated that Apple TV+ has around 45 million subscribers worldwide, which is a solid number, but still falls short of the level of competing giants.

Apple's streaming platform continues to maintain its reputation as an exclusive and high-quality service, but the question remains whether this model will be sustainable in the long term in the fight against giant competitors who are betting on quantity and large franchises. Developments in the coming years will show whether Applu will manage to change this situation and move among the largest players on the market.
