Free online file converters can pose a serious security risk, the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) warns. Users who use these websites or mobile apps to convert files to other formats often don’t realize that they may be unknowingly providing sensitive personal information. The FBI warned that some websites and apps collect personally identifiable information (PII), such as names, email addresses, phone numbers, and even credit card information. In the worst cases, malware can be installed on your computer or phone, which can lead to ransomware attacks or identity theft.
