Company Photo tutorial and its editor and analyst Matic Broz published interesting data regarding photographs this year and throughout the almost two hundred year history of photographs as such. The most interesting thing is how the number of photos taken every day is growing and how significantly the number of photos taken by smartphones is growing at the expense of classic cameras.

How many photos will there be in 2024?

  • In 2024, 1,93 trillion photos will be taken
  • We take 5,3 billion photos a day, that's 61 photos per second, 400 million photos per minute and 3,7 million photos per hour.
  • The average person in the US takes 20 photos a day
  • The total number of photos in the world will be 12,4 trillion
  • More than 94% of all photos taken in 2024 will be taken with a smartphone
  • The number of photos indexed by Google at the end of 2024 will be over 136 billion
  • We share 14 billion photos every day across social networks and messengers. The most popular is WhatsApp with 6,9 billion photos shared daily

The world's first photograph, View from a Window at Le Gras, was taken in 1826, almost two hundred years ago. The first color photograph was taken in 1861. In 1988, Fujifilm introduced the first digital camera. Until then, photographs were relatively rare, with only a handful being taken each day, compared to today. Today, we take billions of photos every day, thanks to the rise of smartphone photography.one. Interestingly, in 2010, just 14 years ago, Google indexed only 10 billion images, today it has more than 136 billion. If we go even further back in history, Google image search was launched in 2001, and at that time Google offered 250 million indexed images. It was not until 2005 that Google managed to reach 1 billion images.

Professional photographers still use SLRs or OMD cameras. However, more than 94% of all photos taken this year will be taken with a smartphone. In 2020, this was 89% of photos, and in 2023 it was 93% of photos. Google officially states that Android devices take 93 million selfies every day. One in three photos taken by people aged 18 to 24 is a selfie. The average user iOS device has approximately 2400 photos on their phone, the average Android user has approximately 1900 photos.
