With almost a year's delay, the Google Maps Gl featureanceabke Directions or "clear routes" toonehas been extended to Android devices and iOS worldwide. This long-awaited addition improves the convenience and safety of navigation by bringing important travel information directly to the lock screen. Google originally announced this feature back in February 2023, but its rollout took significantly longer than expected.

Aside from a few sporadic occurrences throughout last summer, there were no further updates on the feature's development until January 2024, when it was announced that the feature had begun to roll out quietly to users worldwide. Now, according to the Android Police server, it is spreading across the board, even among Apple users. The said feature gives you a quick overview of your trip with essential updates like real-time Estimated Time of Arrival (ETA) and turn-by-turn navigation directions. You can track your progress along the route overview even without launching full navigation, which is ideal for route confirmation or when you're in familiar territory. Maps will also automatically adjust your route if you decide to take a detour without any manual intervention, ensuring you stay on track even if unexpected changes occur.

The new navigation options also mean you won't have to constantly unlock your phone to check your progress. This is especially useful when driving, as it makes your journeys safer.
