Earth is quite possibly facing an intervention from outer space today. However, not by an alien civilization, but by technology created by humans. The uncontrollable ERS-2 satellite is hurtling towards it, which will enter the atmosphere during this evening and although it will probably burn up in it for the most part, some of its fragments may fall to Earth and theoretically hit populated areas. At least that's what the European Space Agency (ESA) says, which monitors the uncontrollable satellite, or at least tries to do so.

The estimated time of the satellite's entry into the Earth's atmosphere is around 16:49 our time (ie around 15:49 GMT). However, the ESA adds in one breath that the "risk window" in which the satellite could enter the atmosphere is significantly wider - it begins specifically at 15:00 our time and ends at 18:30 our time. If you're interested in where the satellite might end up, and by extension, where it should be moving roughly now, you can follow it via the live stream below.
