Not every technological error can be detected shortly after its occurrence. A good example can be the recent discovery by security experts from Eurecom, who found several serious, but mainly rather difficult to fix, security errors in the Bluetooth standard. Even this startling fact in itself has a decent climax - the errors already concern version 4.2, which was released in December 2014, and also affect the latest Bluetooth 5.4 released in February 2023, as well as all Bluetooth versions released during this period.

According to security experts, all the bugs revolve around breaking the privacy of Bluetooth communication and therefore around the potential threat of current and future data exchange. Exploiting the bug disrupts the way Bluetooth creates security keys to encrypt data. An attacker who is within range of Bluetooth communication is then able to "capture" this communication and then, in extreme cases, even manipulate the transmitted data. Exploiting a bug in Bluetooth is not easy, but the mere fact that this option exists is by no means good news - especially when, for example, the combination of Bluetooth and Wi-Fi is used for data transmission as well Apple AirDrop.
