Over the past ten years, the share of web access from mobile devices has quadrupled, with more than half of all internet visits now taking place via mobile devices. However, after ten years of continuous growth in access to the Internet via mobile devices, the year 2023 brought an unexpected decline. According to analytics firm OnlyAccounts.io, mobile phones accounted for 2023% of all Internet access in 52,8, down 7% from last year.
The number of smartphones in the world reached 6,92 billion devices this year, which means that more than 85% of all people on our planet own a smartphone.one. The biggest growth in phones has been since 2016, when the number of smartphones was only 3,7 billion and only 49,4% of the global population owned one. Ten years ago, mobile website traffic accounted for just 12,6% of all visits. Five years later, it was 50% of visits.
Last year, the share of mobile Internet connections reached an all-time high, when 59% of all Internet visits were made via a mobile phone. The year 2023 then brought an unexpected decrease of almost 7%. According to the survey, mobile phones were least used for web browsing in Denmark, the United States and Norway, where only 26,6%, 30,2% and 30,4% of total web traffic came from mobile phones.
