New survey shows young Britons are suffering from so-called Phone-mo effect. This is the pressure from the environment to have the latest smartphoneone, despite not having one or feeling guilty about damaging the environment. According to a survey of 18-24 year olds in the UK, more than half of all respondents plan to upgrade to the latest smartphoneone, most of them on Black Friday. If all 53% of Britons aged 18 to 24 actually bought a new iPhone 15 Pro, it would mean spending £2,8 billion. In addition, it would mean producing 156 million kilograms of carbon emissions, the equivalent of driving 1,8 billion miles in the average petrol car.

Interestingly, 40% of respondents do not buy a phone because they want newer features or have another personal need to have a newer and better phone. Conversely, 4 in 10 young Britons buy a new smartphoneone They buy because of pressure from friends, colleagues, influencers and retailers. The survey calls this phenomenon a cultural upgrade, which is not caused by interest in the innovations that the new model brings, but simply because others have a new phone and you don't seem dignified enough with your old one in front of them.

According to research by Population Matters plans to buy a new phone on Black Friday, with 37% of all British adults planning to buy a new phone.
