Apple has its own portfolio computers clearly defined. We have portable MacBookand desktop computers. Among the first are the series MacBook Air and Pro, among others Mac mini, Mac Studio, Mac Pro and the perhaps unjustly neglected iMac. Why neglected? Because once you try it, you just want it, and that's its magic.
I've only had it for a while, and just for testing, and I already know it's going to be a sad farewell. My current setup is Mac mini and 32" Samsung Smart Monitor M8 with Magic Keyboard with numeric keypad and Magic Trackpadem. But if I knew then what I know now, it was just an iMac. Now we have an M3 iMac in green for testing in the editorial office, which is exactly the design that Samsung was very inspired by for its smart display. And it's clear why. This device is a design gem.
It should be approached as it is intended. It's a desktop computer that's very likable and has an extremely slim design that takes up virtually no space and can handle any job you throw at it. And yes, thanks to the M3 chip, it can of course also get the job done. A demanding job. But we'll get to all that. Now it's time for the first impressions that the device will make on you after unpacking it. And you probably understand what it did to my little one.
The guards are out of place
I vividly remember how the chin of the iMac, i.e. the space under the display, was criticized after the introduction of the M1 version. But this chin is characteristic of the iMac and Apple of course, it hides almost all the technology in it, so it is justified. I actually like the transition between the display, its white frame, and the chin in the color of the chosen iMac. Moreover, this element is recognized, Apple he didn't try to hide it in any way and I give him plus points for that.
Is 24" really that little? Many have waited and are still waiting for that Apple will introduce a larger version. But for the use that the 24" iMac is intended for, it's the perfect size. It fits in theancIt fits in the living room, even the kitchen, hotel receptions, schools and anywhere else. But it may not be enough for graphic designers, designers, photographers and filmmakers, even if they are the target audience for the iMac? The display is nevertheless great and its only flaw may be that it is "only" 24".

And what else? Yes, yes, that leg. Still not height adjustable. Does it bother you? I was definitely and personally thinking how I would "criticize" her, but I'm completely fine with my basic height, which is 183 cm. The iMac is ingeniously balanced in such a way that you just need to press the top edge with one finger and you're ready to tilt. It's a wonderfully gentle movement, without exerting any excessive pressure.
A truly versatile device
The configuration we tested is with an M3 chip with an 8-core CPU, 10-core GPU, 16 GB of RAM and a 512 SSD. I can't assess the performance as such yet, it goes without saying that so far everything is running smoothly. With the basic set of macOS options, you can start working right away, paradoxically, it will take you longer to unpack the computer than to start it up.
And when you play music from the built-in speakers for work, you'll immediately throw away all the portable ones. Apple he praised them already with the first generation and it's nice to hear that. The iMac is truly a versatile device that you either love or don't need. Its biggest competitors are mainly MacBooky. For the same price you get a portable device, which may make more sense to many. But if you want it for your home orancElář, it's a clear choice that I would immediately exchange for my work setup. By the way, won't any of you buy the M1 Mac mini with M8 Samsung Monitor?
I have an iMac from 2015, with a 27″ Retina ... I fed it with memory, it works fine, and maybe it will last for a few more years ...
What bothers me is that the OS stopped at BigSur, at AirM1 has Sonoma and there will be other versions, so it's a bit inconsistent in terms of the set environment etc...
In November 2014 I went to buy the then new 27" 5K :-). For the last two years I have been slowly looking for a replacement. But 24" is not 27" and especially with the M1 iMac it was max 16GB RAM. As a hobby photographer, I couldn't resist. I bought it for the spring Air 2020 with M1 on the road and especially for testing M1 with 8GB 😃.
And now it's probably time to try 24". Or everything else will be enough for me :-).
To that "advertisement"... To the Mac, other resolutions than Retina never! :-) I had a Samsung 27" 4k and the display was terrible - plus the compatibility was also poor, often enough that the output resolution would change after waking up the Mac mini….. So I agree, either the iMac or Mac mini with some fully compatible monitor intended directly for MacOS.
I own an iMac24 with M1 8gb ram and 256gb disk. A lot of people complain about the screen size, but for me it is perfectly sufficient for watching YouTube or multitasking. I generally love huge displays, but personally I wouldn't expect a 32 inch display, it is perfectly sufficient for work and entertainment. If I really want to enjoy a movie, I will turn on a 55 TV. The iMac is for people who want to have their own office and a larger display than on laptops. This is exactly my case, I can't work in a noisy cafe, or I can't do any mentally demanding work because the foreign environment distracts me. I have a 16 inch for traveling MacBook Pro, but as I say, I hate working on the road. As for 8gb, people write a lot of praise for it, but they work with 15 safari with open windows, turned on pages, open 3 PDFs at once and that I would click on something and the wheel would spin for 10 seconds really bothered me nesthello, so even for more demandingancIt is absolutely sufficient for my work. I even play games like LoL on it and I have no problem. As for memory, 256 is relatively small, but my documents, work applications, PDFs are absolutely sufficient. In case my storage space increases over time, I would think about an external drive that will be constantly connected to the iMac on the desk. It will also be much cheaper. For someone who makes a living editing videos or takes a lot of photos on a DSLR, I would choose a configuration with 16 GB of RAM and much larger storage, but then we will get to the amount of 60 thousand. However, these configurations are really only for professionals and let's face it - how many of us really make a living as a professional photographer or editor? Then it is no longer a question of money and I would buy an XDR display and maximally inflated Mac mini. That is priced somewhere else entirely. If someone is thinking about an iMac and wants a quality work tool that can handle amateur video editing and photo editing, buy the basic one with a calm heart. variantu and add a keyboard with Touch ID. You will be thrilled. Buy something nice for your wife and children with the money you save.
