In two days it will be exactly one month since the App Store on iOS The eRouška application has arrived. It was supposed to help the Czech Republic defeat the coronavirus pandemic thanks to technology that records contacts with strangers who have also installed eRouška on their smartphones. The principle of the records is completely simple. ProIt works on the basis of mutual detection of Bluetooth signals, which are recorded in the eRouška, with a unique ID assigned to the detected device, under which the registered user was hiding. However, only hygienists can decipher its identity, which makes all records completely safe in terms of user data. However, the catch is how the application works on iPhonech. It was they who got in the way of a seemingly brilliant idea.

If you, like me, downloaded eRouška in the past few weeks and started testing it, you probably noticed how it (doesn't) record nearby phones with eRouška when it's running in the background. Unlike Androids, iPhones don't allow any significant Bluetooth work in the background, and what's more, apps that aren't actively used automatically go to sleep, partially or completely, after a while. And that's the biggest problem with eRouška. You certainly don't want to walk around town with this app running right on your screen, but that's the only way. iOS a version capable of functioning reasonably. After it is “put aside” in the background, it stops actively recording surrounding eRoušky and is only visible to them, only to disappear from them soon after it goes completely to sleep.

It should be noted that the entire problem lies practically only in systemic politics. Applu. This is completely different from Android, which does not mind similar applications running in the background (if they are supported by a specific version of the system) and does not limit their operation in any way. However, since there is a large representation of iPhone users in the Czech Republic (although compared to Android users, the share of Apple users is a minority) and the entire application is built to be as widespread as possible across Czech smartphones, it was clear that it simply had to find its way to iPhones, even if it is imperfect on them. Even partial functionality is much better than none in this regard.

The only way to get it in terms of usability iOS version of the eRouška to the level of its android counterpart is to switch to the “coronavirus protocol” Applu, which was released recently. Simply put, it allows apps used to fight the coronavirus to run in the background of the iPhone without any major restrictions, as is the case with Android. However, switching to this protocol is not exactly a win either. Pro At least according to the available information, this would make eRouška incompatible with older versions. iOS, as it would be based on technology only available in iOS 13.5 and newer. It is a bit of an exaggeration to say that eRouška is now in a vicious circle from which it will probably not escape anytime soon. For this to happen, it would either have to run without any problems in the background of older versions iOS than 13.5 (which is unrealistic), or the vast majority of Czechs would have to switch to iOS 13.5 and thus open the door to the adoption of the "coronavirus protocol".
